Well, my issue was a bit more basic--my laptop didn't want to boot from a USB, and when I tried to go into the BIOS to change the boot order, I couldn't. Doubtless this is a devious plan to prevent me from doing exactly the thing I want to do. This was some time ago, so I don't remember the details now. But I do know people to ask for help.
