General update + Star Wars beta?

1) I seem to have written Star Wars fic (for Rogue One), but I don't know anyone in the fic-writing fandom. Anyone want to read it through for me? It is Cassian/Bodhi (sort of) and less than 2000 words.

2) Who has posted their Yuletide story? ME. I have posted my Yuletide story. And I'm quite happy with it, too. How is yours going?

3) Today I found Trametes suaveolens, a poroid wood-living fungus not found in this county or the surrounding ones since the 1960's, at least according to the online database. Eeeee!! \o/ At least I am 99.5% sure it is this one, I need to check it with an expert.

4) I've been doing some different stuff at work lately, namely visiting students who will be math teachers while they are out doing internships at schools. I observe them giving a class and then give them feedback afterwards. I was dubious at first if I should be doing this given that I have no experience teaching high school myself, but my boss seemed to think I was the right person. And it went fine! I mean, I'll probably get better at it with time, but it was easy to find stuff to talk about and tips to give them. It was also good for me as a teacher, because it made me reflect a lot on what I do myself. I am excited for my next course so I can put that reflection into practice.

5) Talked to my long-term crush on the phone yesterday and I have been happy all day about that. Non-awkwardness achieved! \o/ Except for that one stupid thing I said which I have been wishing I didn't say, but hopefully it is stupider in my head than in reality.

comments

1) Just spent the whole weekend in a board meeting with the environmental NGO where I am treasurer. I organized the practical details and also spent some time on preparing a proper agenda and meeting procedures and so on, and I think it was worth it, but whew, now I'm tired. There was a bit of a clash of meeting cultures--I prefer a fairly structured meeting environment whereas other people want to be able to speak freely without speaker lists and so on. Cool thing we have recently done: helped a Russian group get 20,000 hectares of old-growth forest protected by pressuring the Swedish-owned company that wanted to log it! Woohoo! To clarify: the Russian group did basically all of the work for it, and then they just asked us to help scare the company. *g*

2) Have no time right now for all the AO3 and OTW stuff that's going on. I pondered at first how to post this without andeincascade seeing, but then I realized that this is for a charity auction, not a birthday! She already knows I'm doing it. So, Ande, you are welcome to volunteer yourself if you want.

Anyway: I'm looking for feedback on characterization, not technical aspects. For whatever reason, I find it hard to read Vecchio. I went back to watch an episode to get a feel for the way he talks, and it's really quite distinctive, but it's hard to do. I feel like I nailed it in a couple of dialogue lines, but other times I feel like he's not distinct enough from the way I read Kowalski. This is difficult especially in quick exchanges without dialogue tags--suddenly I get why people complain about lack of dialogue tags. This has never been a problem for me with Fraser and Kowalski, because their voices are so distinct for me. Good news: I feel like I get Frannie's voice now, which I was also having trouble with before.

comments

Is there anyone who'd like to read a half-written fic for me? I need a bit of feedback to keep me going (but not line-by-line beta reading at this stage). This is a mostly gen fic about Victoria after "Victoria's Secret". Basically, it's about her eventually getting over Fraser and working her way to a life mostly without crime. She ends up as a computer programmer/hacker, although I haven't gotten to that part yet, and I dread it because of the research involved. There will also be Victoria/OFC. Anyway, the fic is 5400 words now, and will likely be fairly long.

Am recording a book for Librivox now: Peter Kropotkin's autobiography "Memoirs of a Revolutionist", which I love. It's quite interesting to read something other than fanfic for a change, and luckily I have a half-Russian neighbor who is helping me with the pronunciation. Although I have to say that switching between English r:s, Russian r:s (which are like Swedish r:s) and French r:s is annoying. I can do each of them individually with no problem, but switching around makes me stumble.

comments

It's quite annoying to realize you've been mispronouncing a word that occurs all the time in the story you're recording. Must re-record and edit, arrgh. (The word is "tapestry", which I was saying as "TAY-pes-try" but which is supposed to be "TAH-pes-try".)

On that note, anyone feel like beta-listening to this podfic? It was supposed to be my final Amplificathon entry, but then it got delayed and I missed the deadline. Ah well. It'll be done in a day or two, and will be about 1 hour and 45 minutes long. You probably need to know canon to appreciate it, so don't feel like you have to volunteer if you haven't read the books. : )

In other news, I'm writing again! \o/

comments

1) Guess who just finished revising a 10,000 word fic and set it off to a second round of beta? Me! \o/

2) I'm looking for a beta-listener to a podfic of this (a fairly long Yuletide fic based on Le Guin's "The Left Hand of Darkness"). I had my last podfic beta-listened, and it was great: I learned that "parameter" is pronounced pa-RA-met-er and not PA-ra-MET-er, and also that "gauche" does not have the same vowel sound in English as in French. Anyone want to help me root out more mispronunciations?

3) Am feeling better about work now. I'm improving my concentration by going off to the department library, where there is no Internet or computer to distract me, and it's amazing how much more I get done. This afternoon I had an intense three hours in the computer lab, though, with students bombarding me with questions. It amuses me every time how I don't actually know much about MATLAB programming and yet I can still answer their questions--most of them have to do with general logic and math, and if there's something specific to MATLAB commands or syntax, I can always tell them to use the "help" command (which apparently they can't do on their own). I felt like a wrung-out rag afterward, though.

4) I'll be working in the mountains for a month this year, too! I have a different kind of employment at the math department this year, and there won't be any trouble about getting time off from that. I'm looking forward to it so much.
So, I have this story which I first started working on two and a half years ago. It's been through several drafts, and then lain dormant in my WIP folder. But it felt like a pity to do all that work on it and never get it done, so while I was up in the mountains this summer, I took it up again and did some more rewriting.

The story is about Martha Fraser's youth, and it's mostly gen, although there is some Martha/George. It's 10,000 words long and rated PG-13. If you know about the 1920's or about Chinese culture (there's a Chinese OC), that would be awesome, but I will happily take your help anyway--just having another pair of eyes on it would be great.
I was at a folk music festival this weekend, and had a lot of fun. I also bought myself a pair of lovely handmade dancing shoes in black leather. &hearts I am not really a shoe person--that is, I don't have many shoes, and don't look much at shoes. But what I love most in both clothes and shoes are when they are well-made and well-suited for their purpose. This is why I love my hiking boots and my anorak, and it's why I fell for these dancing shoes. I hope I'll use them a lot.

I've also written a New Year's Resolution story. It's sort of a trial run for this year's Yuletide, and it's an alternate retelling of one of the Child ballads (the one about the two sisters, one of whom is drowned and comes back as a harp). Is there anyone who wants to beta-read it for me? It's about 1300 words, and the canon is just a song, so it won't take long to read. The story is sort of like a fairy tale, and it's in prose, not in ballad form.

comments

If you're wondering why I'm posting so much lately, it's because I'm alone with a dog, I think. I think I needed that. Time on my own + cuddly dog = perfect!

Anyway, my big bang fic just went over the 14,000 word mark, and I think I need a beta to take a look at it. I don't need line-by-line beta reading yet (I'll save word choice and grammar and stuff like that for later) but what I do need is someone to look at the big picture, and see if it's shaping up well, or if there are structural issues I need to fix. I've never written something this long.

It's a post-CotW established-relationship F/K story, and it's basically about Ray's problems with adjusting to life in the north, the impact that has on his and Fraser's relationship, and how Ray eventually goes to Depot and becomes a Mountie. Also, I'd originally meant to have alternating sections between that story, and a casefic set ten years in the future with them working as partners, but as I've now written 13,000 words of the first story, and only 1200 words of the second one (most of which are sex), I don't know if that will actually happen. Hmm, I could use some advice on that, too.

comments

I think my strategy of recording really rare fandoms paid off, since they give more points. But whoring for points wasn't the only reason I did that--I really do love a lot of rare fandoms.

I am almost done with my Fraser/Kowalski/Smithbauer story. Anyone want to beta-read it when it's done? It's about 5000 words and rated NC-17.

In non-fannish news, I am down in the south of Sweden. Like the slightly manipulative younger sister she is (I mean that affectionately), she got me to bake bread and have dinner ready for her when she came home from work. Then we spent all of last night singing and playing records for each other, the way we do. "Oh, you have to hear this song!" and then other one goes "Awesome!
