Fic: "A Point of Honour" (Flight of the Heron)

Ha, I made every effort to be sneaky, but to no avail! I concealed the writing of this story from the Write Every Day community, largely by writing it in parallel with my longfic, and also changed my formatting, among other things by using double quotes instead of single. But still apparently I was obvious! I was trying to get back at [personal profile] sanguinity (to be clear: what she did was to make my Yuletide! \o/ But also she guessed my story while I did not guess her gift to me, argh…).

Ah well. Either 1) my style is too distinctive, 2) we are just too few people in this fandom, or 3) [personal profile] sanguinity is just too good at the guessing game. Probably all three! And now I am going to switch those double quote marks back to single…

But I am happy with the story, and happy that [personal profile] sanguinity enjoyed it! : D I also beta read [personal profile] garonne’s two stories for her, so I knew she was going to get a good haul. Thanks to [personal profile] garonne and [personal profile] regshoe for beta-reading this one, and to [personal profile] solo for translating the Scots!

Now, if I hadn't already known it was you because of beta reading, I would have guessed it immediately from that author's note! If you want to cunningly disguise your formatting you should leave the space out of an occasional smiley face : D

Anyway, regardless, it is a very good story :)

And I don't think you could fool me, either--your style is so distinctive. : D (not :D)

:) Possibly not! But you're right in your comment below about there being a certain pleasure in being known. And if I was deliberately trying to disguise my style I'd to have to, idk, mention a bird without saying what species it is and what it's doing, which I could never :D

Aw, I'm sorry I foiled your carefully plotted plans! Alas, I did not even think to look at double vs. single quotes! As I was reading, I thought to myself, "You know who would really enjoy this story? [personal profile] luzula! It's right up her alley!" and long experience has taught me that when I'm thinking that during an anon exchange, the reason it's so beautifully suited to said person is almost always because it was authored by said person!

Further, the selection of topic spoke to a certain insight and confidence into what I might like, outside of what I had thought to prompt. Obviously those convos with you have all been conducted in public and anyone might have taken note of them, but you did lead that particular list of candidates...

But I agree that I was strongly helped by the size of the fandom -- the list of possible suspects was not that long.

And yes, I got SUCH a good haul. Thank you so much for your contributions, both as author and beta! <3

After all, there is a certain pleasure also in being known.

Heh, yes. If I could recognize you this go, it's because I've read a goodly number of your words this last year or so. :-)

but trying to write a story which is completely different from my own taste and style is perhaps going too far. And it's another question how far I would succeed in such a thing.

And doing it within a small and fairly cohesive fandom is super-difficult. I've pulled it off at [community profile] holmestice by writing parts of the multi-fandom no one had ever previously associated with me, but unless we're talking about Ewen/Alison, the FotH playing field isn't so big as to have well-defined "We've ever seen her smoking behind the bleachers before!" areas within it, I don't think.
