I, um, have a new fandom
I almost thought that was never going to happen, okay? I mean, I know I love all kinds of (mostly literary) Yuletide fandoms, but other than that, it's been due South all the way for two years. But now I'm doing the staring-dreamily-at-screencaps thing and devouring fic and stuff.
"Generation Kill" is a miniseries about US Marines in Iraq. I feel extremely shallow when I sit there thinking about the pretty boys who should be making out with each other when they're in, you know, a war, which means that people are dying. And it's sometimes uncomfortable to watch because of some of the military jargon, which sometimes manages to be both misogynistic, homophobic and racist. Ouch. My new choice of fandom, it shames me a bit.
The show is actually quite interesting, though, and makes me think that people should never be allowed to make war, because of all the incompetence and sheer stupidity that is happening. Like, they lose their supply truck, because their officer decides they don't have time to change the tire and so they leave it behind. Yeah.
Generation Kill reaches awesome levels of slashiness. For example:
Nate: *hands Brad a can of lube, which he'd been looking for* (okay, gun lube, but still)
Brad: Not to be homoerotic about this, sir, but I could kiss you.
There's a picspam here if anyone wants to know what they look like. IMO Nate is insanely cute (god, the mouth on that guy). Also, he just...tries to do the best he can in a fucked-up situation, which I suppose is what appeals to me about him. Brad is played by a Swedish actor (Alexander SkarsgÄrd), which amuses me. If I record podfic for this, my Swedish accent will finally be appropriate.
Anyway, it seems to be a fairly small fandom, which is kind of a relief to me, because it means I can't drown myself in fic for months (there is some really good fic, though). And it's not like I'm ever going to write anything in it, either.
Gah, I kind of feel like I'm being unfaithful to due South, which is ridiculous. I am not leaving, okay? I'm just... having a fling.
For now, please comment at the LJ entry.

(I have Gen Kill, but haven't had time to watch it yet.)

Okay, I need to stop reading fic now and go clean the house (it's my turn this week). You know what the drawback is with GK fandom? It has a Ray in it, which is kind of confusing to me.

Yay! GK! Brad/Nate!
Have you read the long East Timor AU (http://tevere.dreamwidth.org/32421.html) fic?

And yes, the East Timor fic is how I got into the fandom and why I watched the TV series. I loved it so much.

I started with the show, then sought out the fic. I've been reading it for a while now, but I'm a bad person and have been entirely in lurk mode. I didn't think there was going to be any AU that worked for me, but I really liked the East Timor one.

And yeah, I can imagine that I'd be more picky with AU:s in this fandom than I am in dS. I mean, Brad and Nate feel like they need to have (or at least have had in the past) some kind of intense situation (like being in combat) for it to have the same feel as canon. And the East Timor AU gives them that, definitely.
