Update on my new place

It is now a little more than a month until I move into my new place. I keep feeling like something will happen to prevent it, like having miscalculated on the finances of it all or something (but obviously I've worked through them multiple times and also shown them to my mom!). It's such a change in my life that I wonder if it will actually happen??

But on the other hand, things are now much more settled: I have found three housemates who want to live with me, and whom I am excited to live with! I feel like it will make such a difference compared to my previous housemates, with whom I didn't have much in common. The one I met first (J) is already becoming a friend, and we call each other on the phone quite often. All of them are interested in vegetable gardening and land stewardship, which is great as it means more people to share the labor that having 10 hectares of land will inevitably mean. The greatest hurdle right now is that J has three horses (also a cat and five chickens, but those are not a problem). She tends to accrue animals, it seems. One of the horses is old and has cancer and will soon have to be put down, so that leaves one normal-sized horse and one small Shetland pony. So right now we're discussing whether she can bring the horses. And...I think it will be possible, with the understanding that she has the responsibility for them. I will have grazing land, and I will have a building which is now used as a garage for a mobile home, but which J says could be used for the horses in the winter with very little modification. There are also neighbors who are interested in the grazing land for their sheep because they have too little of it, but we're going to talk with them and see if we can make it work. J says that anyway it's good to switch which kind of animals graze the land, because of parasite load. And I want the pastureland grazed anyway! Otherwise it'll become shrubby.

So far all the neighbors seem friendly, and the people selling the place are so lovely. They've let me come and visit multiple times and are leaving a lot of the furniture etc. Oh, and another of the future housemates is a biology nerd like me! : D Looking forward to making a species list for the land with him. Finally, one of the apple trees is a Gravenstein, my very favorite apple variety. <3 <3

HORSES, omg!!!! Speaking as someone who does not have to deal in any way with these horses, I am so pro-horse.

My two nieces, who are visiting right now, are certainly pro-horse as well! J said they could ride on the Shetland pony (who looks to me like a cross between a horse and a hog). But yeah, I am very happy to get grazing from animals that I will not, in the main, be responsible for.

This sounds amazing, Luz! I'm impressed with your undertaking, and hope everything works out well. (Notice I didn't say worked out as planned, because in my experience, nothing ever works out quite as planned LOL.) I have to admit to a little envy. My sister and I occasionally talk about buying a place suitable for animal rescue but I'm not sure we'll ever be able to do it. I'm looking forward to hearing more once you've moved in.

Ha ha, well, I just found out TODAY that I can't get a mortgage from the bank I had planned, since it's a farm and not an ordinary house. But there's still time to find another bank, whew.

J seems to be a person who does some animal rescue stuff, that's how she got the horses she has now.

Thanks! I move in a week, OMG. There's so much stressful administrative stuff! I'm grateful I moved out of my apartment in the spring and could store my stuff in my parents' garage. That does lessen the stress of the actual move.
