luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
Friends from the US, I am so so sorry. *hugs* if you want them. Mourn and then organize, I guess (not that you haven't been doing that already).

I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
This was my choice of lighter reading after the Alexievich. Not that I'd read it before, but yes, it turned out to be a good choice--it has a delightful narrative voice that really charmed me. I guess you could call it a romance novel, but it's just as much about family and growing up and writing. And it's really funny, too.

The Fortunate Fall by Raphael Carter
'90's cyberpunk, and it doesn't feel dated at all. It's quite densely written, with lots of worldbuilding and references thrown about, but at the same time it's a fast read. I suspect I'd have to read it again to catch everything. It's about what technology can do to identity and memory, and about oppression and revolution. And love and betrayal. Ha, I keep reading stuff and afterwards thinking it would've been perfect for my fannish bookclub. Ah well, this one's out of print and a bit hard to get hold of, so maybe not.
