luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
1) I managed to keep away from the computer for almost all of yesterday, which was good. I've been having problems with my shoulders and hands this week, and computer work is what causes it, so. There's a big workload on the tag wranglers this week in preparation for Yuletide, but I'm trying to tell myself that it's not worth it to sacrifice my health for that. Instead, I played a zombie board game with some friends. One of my friends had made the game, and is beta-testing it. We had lots of fun with that, and then we cooked dinner together. \o/

2) I posted a Fraser/Victoria folk ballad recently for the [community profile] ds_flashfiction genre challenge. I'm really quite happy with it.

3) I'm doing guest reccing in November for [livejournal.com profile] ds_recsredux, and my first set of recs is for short podfics (or podficlets, as I like to call them).

4) Recent podfic: That Which Gives Extras, by [livejournal.com profile] katieforsythe (Sherlock Holmes (book canon), Holmes/Watson, NC-17, 1h 7m)

5) Have written 300 words of my DSSS fic, and I'm pretty confident that I can make it.

6) I was pondering [really rare fandom] yesterday, and wondering if I could offer to write it for Yuletide. And then a whole fic suddenly unfolded in my mind! Yuletide isn't quite as nervous-making as it seemed before.

Title: Cold Snowy North
Characters: Fraser and various other canon characters
Rating: PG
Genre: bluegrass song (for the [community profile] ds_flashfiction genre challenge)
Length: 8 verses
Summary: Fraser's journey from north to south and then back again.
Notes: This is a rewritten version of the traditional bluegrass song "Bright Sunny South". You can find the original lyrics here, and you can hear the song as performed by the Union Station band here. Thanks to [personal profile] j_s_cavalcante for looking the partial lyrics over a long time ago (yes, this has lain forgotten in my WIP folder for a long time, before I decided that I should finish it off for this challenge). Also thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mizface for more recent beta-reading, and to the [livejournal.com profile] ficfinishing comm. I meant to record this with my sister, as I usually do with filk songs, but alas, she's in the south and I'm in the north, so it'll have to wait.

A while ago, [livejournal.com profile] kill_claudio wrote a set of post-CotW haikus, Shattered Light, which really stayed with me. They are so wistful and longing, and Fraser's willingness to settle for what he can get just breaks my heart. The images in them are gorgeous, and there's an entire story in just these few words.

So I set the poem to music, and [livejournal.com profile] kill_claudio gave me permission to post it here. I sing the melody, and my sister plays guitar and sings harmony. I'm actually pretty happy with this recording, unlike the last song I posted (The Unquiet Grave, for the Genre Challenge at [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction) where I had to rush to make a recording before the challenge ended.

I have finally finished my slashy filk version of Stan Rogers' Northwest Passage. It took months, which you wouldn't think given the length, and I finally finished it while above the Arctic Circle, which seemed fitting.

Title: Northwest Passage (the slashy version)
Author: Luzula
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: Melody and some lyrics by Stan Rogers, harmonies and the rest of the lyrics by me. His original lyrics are here for comparison. Characters aren't mine either. I make no money from this.
Acknowledgements: Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] j_s_cavalcante for betaing this and pushing me to improve the first version.

I recorded this together with my sister, you can download it here.
ETA: It is now also generously hosted in the podfic archive of [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur: right click and download.

I sing solo in the first verse (okay, maybe it's a bit high for me, but I wanted to sing the melody somewhere), then we're in unison, then she takes over the melody and I sing the harmony, since she's the soprano and I'm the alto.

Here are the lyrics: )
