Dear Correspondent, thank you so much for writing something for me! : D

The Flight of the Heron - D. K. Broster
Pairing: (Keith Windham & None, Keith Windham & Francis Delahaye, Keith Windham & Any, Ewen Cameron & Francis Delahaye, Ewen Cameron & Any, Ewen Cameron/Alison Grant/Keith Windham, Ewen Cameron/Keith Windham)
Epistolary Format: Books and Articles, Journals and Diaries, Letters/Emails/Audio or Video Messages
I don't think anyone has written more of Keith's journals than we get in canon--I'd love to read that! Do any of the other characters keep a journal? Do any of the canon events (or events in some AU of canon) end up in any newspapers? Do future historians write articles about Keith and Ewen (and if so, do the 21st century historians argue with the 19th century ones)? Or you could write me any of the characters above corresponding.

Jill - E. A. Dillwyn
Pairing: Kitty Mervyn/Gilbertina Trecastle | Caroline Jill
Epistolary Format: Books and Articles, Journals and Diaries, Letters/Emails/Audio or Video Messages
I would love to get Kitty's POV on what she thinks of Jill, perhaps in a journal of hers! Or perhaps Jill and Kitty exchange letters after they part? Do any of Jill and Kitty's shenanigans ever end up in newspapers?

Kidnapped - Robert Louis Stevenson
Pairing: Alan Breck Stewart/David Balfour
Epistolary Format: Books and Articles, Journals and Diaries, Letters/Emails/Audio or Video Messages
Does David keep a secret diary--or perhaps Alan keeps one? Perhaps we could get to read some of their correspondence when they are apart? It would also be interesting to have either of them correspond with someone else and for the Alan/Davie relationship to be implied/suggested in the letters. Or perhaps some in-universe future historian writes an article about their relationship, comparing the text of the book with what is revealed by other evidence they left behind?

"Mr Rowl" - D. K. Broster
Pairing: Hervey Barrington/Raoul des Sablières, Hervey Barrington & None, Hervey Barrington & Any, Lieutenant Hunter/Raoul des Sablières
I would love to read Barrington's journal, where perhaps he reveals more of his backstory and how he is affected by Raoul. Or perhaps some of his correspondence with his sister? Or, of course, you could write me some correspondence between Hervey and Raoul. The post-canon scenario I would love for these two is for Hervey somehow to be captured by Raoul and the tables turned, but perhaps that might be difficult to write in the form of journals/letters. (I would prefer that Barrington not lose another ship in an embarrassing manner, though--poor man.) Although that scenario might work as journal entries? As for Lieutenant Hunter, perhaps he engages himself somehow in trying to get Raoul's sentence lightened, after being so impressed by his sense of honour?

Things I enjoy in general: fork-in-the-road AU:s, historical specificity and period language, outside POV, the way that letters are often constrained so that characters have to hint at their feelings or might feel the need to project some image of themselves.
Things I don't enjoy: Change-of-setting AU in historical canons (but I love canon divergence, and I also enjoy adding supernatural/fantasy elements to the canon setting), non-con/dubcon, infidelity, body horror. Please treat canonical female love interests kindly, if they appear in the fic.

[Sorry I didn't manage to quite finish this letter in time, and then left it to languish a few days! It should be finished now, but please ask questions via the mods if anything is unclear.]

Welcome, and I am so happy that we share this rare fandom! I hope you have fun writing. : )

General likes: I enjoy the whole range from gen to porn, and like both happy and angsty stories. I like historical specificity, landscape description and attention paid to the setting in general, old-fashioned omniscient POV, canon-like writing style, loyalty, characters having conflicting loyalties.

General dislikes: Change-of-setting AU in historical canons (but I love canon divergence, and I also enjoy adding supernatural/fantasy elements to the canon setting), non-con/dubcon, infidelity, body horror. If you go with something angsty, I prefer for there to still be a meaning to the character's lives and not be unrelentingly dark.

Bonnie Dundee, England Series, The Flight of the Heron, Mr Rowl, The Wounded Name )
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
General tastes: I enjoy everything from fluff to angst, and from gen to porn. I love the addition of spooky and/or supernatural elements to canon! But would be equally happy with a treat. In general, I enjoy it when attention is paid to capturing the style of canon. I don't want infidelity/partner betrayal or non-con, and also don't enjoy body horror (spooky/scary/supernatural/angsty: yes please! details of character turning into a decomposing zombie? no thanks!).

Bonnie Dundee by Rosemary Sutcliff (Darklis Ruthven, Lady Jean)
We don't see much of their relationship in the book, since it's from Hugh's POV, but Darklis and Jean make a sort of counterpart to Hugh's devotion to Claverhouse. I would love to see more of them! You can take it in a femslashy direction if you want, but honestly I think what I want is the sort of loyalty (especially in wartime) that we often get between male characters, but less often between female ones. Perhaps with an unspoken romantic or sexual tension? So, how do they first form that bond? What conflicting loyalties do they have, and how do they handle them? What happens between them when Lady Jean marries? What about after Claverhouse dies?

The Wounded Name by D K Broster (Laurent de Courtomer/Aymar de la Rocheterie, Laurent de Courtomer & M. Perrelet, Laurent de Courtomer/Aymar de la Rocheterie/Avoye de Villecresne)
I love this in all its iddy glory: when you think it can't become any more over the top, Broster proves you wrong. The hurt-comfort, the courtroom drama, Aymar's angsty wounded honour, Laurent's devotion, it's all great. You could give me the kissing or sex they're probably having in some missing scene, for example, or you could write some canon divergence: what happens if Aymar's name is not cleared at the end? For that matter, Laurent could well be court-martialled for ditching his duty and staying with Aymar! With Avoye, you could either have her and Aymar love each other like siblings instead, or keep their relationship and resolve the ending into poly. But if you do the latter, please don't lean into the sibling-like nature of Aymar/Avoye (it already almost trips my incest squick).

Jill, by E A Dillwyn (Kitty Mervyn/Gilbertina Trecastle | Caroline Jill)
I suppose, to me, Jill seems the most mundane of the canons I have requested, but I would love for you to prove me wrong! I would love to get a slashy missing scene from the book, or something post-canon. Or perhaps some fork-in-the-road AU where things went differently. Or a piece of Kitty’s POV, which the book doesn’t give us. Or an outside POV on them. What I enjoy most about the book is Jill’s talkative and independent POV, and her huge crush on Kitty.

England Series - K J Charles (Archie Curtis/Daniel da Silva)
I just read this and thought it was delicious! For a trick, what if they run into some supernatural creature on an assignment? I do also have a more specific suggestion: I loved everything about the book except for the bit at the end where Archie goes for a forceful non-con kiss to convince Daniel to continue their relationship. So I'd love a fix-it where he uses his words instead, or respects Daniel's decision and leaves, only for Daniel to change his mind later. But feel totally free to ignore this prompt and go for something else instead! Another thing I'd love is an outside POV on them. Daniel presumably has a community and friends--I'd love to see Daniel talking to one of them about Archie, or to see Daniel and Archie through the eyes of one of Daniel's friends. Or through the eyes of a fellow officer of Archie's.

The Flight of the Heron - D. K. Broster (Ewen Cameron/Keith Windham, Ewen Cameron/Alison Grant/Keith Windham)
I have no specific prompts--since I've been writing so much for the fandom, I suppose I just want to read something I wouldn't come up with myself? So, here's what I love about the canon: Obviously I ship Ewen and Keith--the enemies-to-friends-to-lovers aspects, the way they are torn between their duty and their love, the hurt-comfort. Broster knew how to write fannish catnip, is what I'm saying. But I would also really love there to be more Ewen/Alison/Keith in the world! Pretty much anything about them would make me happy. As for tricks, obviously there's a lot of room to play around with Scottish folklore, and with the heron prophecy!

Flemington, The Jacobite Trilogy, The Left Hand of Darkness )
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
Welcome, and I am so happy that we share this rare fandom! There are some story ideas below, but if you have some idea already that you want to write, go for it--I hope I've given you some sense of what I would enjoy. And I hope you have fun writing!

Flemington by Violet Jacob (Archie Flemington, James Logie, Captain Callandar)
I ship Archie Flemington/James Logie and Archie Flemington/Captain Callandar about equally, and would be very happy to receive fic about either pair of characters. Don't feel like you have to include all three of them. Some ideas: What if Flemington and Logie met on the Muir of Pert, or before that, at some point during the war? What if they didn't meet on Inchbrayock, so that Logie doesn't know that Flemington is a spy, and still trusts him? What if Logie tries to save Flemington? Basically, I want all the fork-in-the-road AU:s. As for Flemington and Callandar, you could write a missing scene between them, or try to figure out if there's some way out of that ending. Or some other idea I'm not thinking of. Things I like: conflicts between honour and duty and love, hurt/comfort, geeky historical detail, and landscape description. Tragedy is fine; I actually like the ending.

The Flight of the Heron by D K Broster (Ewen Cameron, Keith Windham)
It feels weird that my main fandom now is actually a Yuletide fandom! Basically I just love Ewen and Keith and want them to be together, but the obstacles in their way are half the fun of it. As for the previous fandom, I love conflicts between honour and duty and love, hurt/comfort, geeky historical detail, and landscape description. You could write some missing scene from canon, some fork-in-the-road AU, or avoid the ending and have them meet again later on, or write about them growing old together, for example.

The Talk of the Town (1942) (Leopold Dilg, Michael Lightcap, Nora Shelley)
Would love fic about all three of them in a relationship together--they make a lovely OT3! Their bickering and teasing and flirting is delightful, and so are their debates about politics and law. I am active in a labor union myself, and would love something that touched on that aspect of it, if you are so inclined.

For all three of the requests, I would prefer not to get a complete change of setting (e g modern-day AU) because the historical setting is part of what I like about it.
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
Er, I am boring and my Yuletide letter is basically copy-pasted from last year's, with some slight modifications. Also it just consists of my sign-up details so that they are visible to anyone else who wants to read them.

But anyway, if you are my assigned writer: welcome, and I am so happy that we share this rare fandom! There are some story ideas below, but if you have some idea already that you want to write, go for it--I hope I've given you some sense of what I would enjoy. And I hope you have fun writing!

Mars Trilogy, Left Hand of Darkness, Always Coming Home )
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
Yay, we share a small fandom! My Yuletide letter is basically just my sign-up details so that they are visible to anyone else who wants to read them. Anyway, there are some story ideas below, but if you have some idea already that you want to write, go for it--I hope I've given you some sense of what I would enjoy. And I hope you have fun writing!

Aubrey/Maturin series - Patrick O'Brian (Diana Villiers)
I find Diana fascinating, and would love to read more about her. Some concrete ideas: Diana/Clarissa has always struck me as an interesting possibility. Clarissa canonically doesn't enjoy sex with men; could it be because she's a lesbian? I am sure Diana and Stephen could come to some sensible arrangement for the times when they are apart. I would also love further exploration of Diana's relationship with Stephen; I really ship them together, especially in the later parts of the series. I also like Diana and Sophie together, but usually not in a slashy sense. (Though feel free to go there if you really ship them--actually, it would be cool with a sedoretu-style group marriage.) You could also write Diana gen, that would also be very welcome: Diana being competent, flamboyant, independent, emotional, and occasionally selfish, but also occasionally great-hearted. Or however you see her.

Do-not-wants: Please don't have Diana die! Also, Diana and Stephen's relationship doesn't have to be front and center at all--you could write a story just about her. But please don't break up Diana and Stephen's relationship or kill off Stephen. Also, I would prefer a story where jealousy doesn't play a large role.

Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson (any characters)
I don't remember feeling fannish about these before, but on reread, I suddenly am! Ideas:
- An AU where Ann and Sax got together on Antarctica. How does this influence the terraforming debate?
- Arkady on Antarctica, pretending to be boring and hiding his revolutionary anarchist plans. His inner monologue is probably hilarious...
- Marina/Ursula/Vlad - what does that relationship look like? We don't get any of their POV:s, but it's made pretty clear that theirs is a poly relationship. Also it would be fun to see them working on their ecological economics.
- Frank/John/Maya. They are not actually my favorite characters, but Frank/John is a slash pairing that cries out for someone to write it.
- Nadia is one of my favorite characters, so maybe just tell me a story about her solving an engineering problem?
Or tell me whatever story interests you most! : ) I really like all the landscape description and technical detail in the books, so feel free to pastische that if you want, but you don't have to (I get that it could be daunting!). I also like all the people and communities and political debate in the Martian underground. I think character and setting is what I'm most interested in here.

Do-not-wants: I would prefer a story that isn't centered around someone's death. Sex is fine, but I would prefer if that wasn't the main point of the story. Also, maybe relevant is that my political opinions are to the left, so if you tell me a story dismissing everything about the Martian revolutions as wrong, I am probably not going to appreciate that. Although of course politics doesn't have to come into the story at all, if you're not interested in that.

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin
I left the character field empty here, because I would love to get worldbuilding fic. That said, if you have an idea for a fic based on one or more of the nominated characters, I am also entirely happy to get that, and I know that it's entirely reasonable (rule-wise) for you to write that for me! If you want to tell the story, I am sure I'll love it too. If I have a preference among the nominated characters, it's for Therem Harth and Genly Ai. Perhaps relevant here is that I like vivid setting and nature description, and I love the whole sequence when they're up on the ice. But I'm happy to get a story about the other nominated characters as well.

Anyway: I am intrigued by Gethen's relationship to technology, where they are very slow to adopt new things and yet they have very useful stuff such as the Chabe stove (I would love to have one). How does their conservative approach work in practice? Was Chabe an inventor, and what is their story? Or maybe Chabe wasn't a person but a hearth with an engineering collective that fine-tuned the stove for long generations? Or maybe have an observer from another planet contrast Gethen's approach with their own. If you don't want to write about technology: how did people on Gethen come up with the theory of evolution? (We know from a comment in the book that they have it.) I'd be happy to read a Gethenian treatise on natural history and biology. And finally, if you're not into science, I would also love to get more Gethenian mythology and folk tales. Or politics is also interesting: how does the Karhide-Orgoreyn situation evolve? On my last reread, I thought the book had a lot of interesting things to say about nationalism. Or worldbuilding about the gender system is also welcome. I like documentation-style fic, which can lend itself well to worldbuilding, but straight-up story is great too.

Do-not-wants: I would prefer something that is reasonably in the style of canon, but canon has death, and torture in prison. So don't feel you have to avoid that kind of thing if the story calls for it. But please don't write something unrelentingly dark. I'm also not particularly interested in something that is just about sex.

Always Coming Home by Ursula K. Le Guin
I recently re-read this book with a book club, and we had lots of interesting discussion. So what I want here is worldbuilding, which maybe seems redundant because that's what the whole book is about. But whatever, basically any exploration of the world that you want to write is welcome.

Ideas (though feel free to have your own idea instead):
- I really liked the story in the "life stories" section about the guy who breeds pear trees. Doing something well and making it your life's work, I find that very moving.
- What do childrens' schooling look like?
- One person in book club speculated that Kesh culture had been intentionally created in the past, could that be so?
- I find Le Guin's various self-inserts fascinating (Pandora, Little Bear Woman, the nameless editor), especially the conflicted Pandora. Maybe you could do the same kind of meta self-insert as a fanfic author writing in Le Guin's world?
- How much does Kesh culture change over time? If you write from the POV of someone who is Kesh in 200 years, what would it look like?
- Maybe write from the POV of someone from another culture who comes to live with the Kesh? What things are similar/different?
- Several people in my book club found the culture frustrating because of its lack of critical and rational thinking, maybe you could adress this?
- Do people do Yuletide over the Exchange, and ask for filthy within-House incest porn?

Well, maybe the last one isn't entirely serious, though if you want to write it, be my guest. *g*

Do-not-wants: Not much, I guess? But would prefer something not unrelentingly dark, and reasonably in the style of canon.

Yay, we share a small fandom! I tried to give a sense of my tastes in each fandom, but please don't feel constrained by any of the specific suggestions. Just have fun writing and I am sure I will love it.

The Dispossessed, Aubrey/Maturin, Paksenarrion, Papillon )

Writer, I'm sorry this letter wasn't up when you got the assignment, since I put nothing in my sign-up beyond the bare bones! But here you go. Obviously you don't have to go with any of my suggestions--they're just there in case you're looking for inspiration. Just have fun writing and I'm sure I'll love it. : )

Travel Light, Naomi Mitchison. Character: Halla
If you write for this, I will be delighted--there isn't any fic for it at all! If you haven't read it, it's a quick read. Here is my rec/review of it. Basically, I just want the continued adventures of Halla. What about her going back to try to find the dragons? What do she and Steinvor get up to together? Time seems fluid in this world. What would happen if Halla gets closer to the modern age? Does Halla ever set down roots, or does she continue to travel light? I'd prefer gen for this; Halla comes across as not interested in sex or romance to me.

Ronja Rövardotter/Ronia the Robber's Daughter, Astrid Lindgren. Characters: Ronja, Lovis
If you by some improbable chance happen to be Swedish, I'd love it if you wrote the story in Swedish. : ) But no worries if you're not. I'd love some bonding moment between Ronja and Lovis. Or backstory for Lovis. Or a glimpse of Ronja's future adventures. I love all the creatures in the forest; it would be great if you included some of them! Ronja/Birk is fine, though I'd prefer not to get a straight-out romance. Or you can keep them in a brother-and-sister-like relationship as they get older.

The Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling. Character: Mowgli
This book consistently makes me cry at the end--there's some button I have about the relationship between human and nature which it pushes very effectively. Hmm, let's see. Mowgli at the end of the book seems to have mastery over the jungle. I'd love something set around that time but before he leaves, where there's something in the jungle he doesn't have mastery of. Or maybe he could meet a human from some village who Mowgli dismisses as not understanding the jungle, who turns out to have some unexpected understanding. Or just some interaction between Mowgli and any of his friends in the jungle--I like the wolves and Kaa especially.
