Dear Confectioner
Jan. 6th, 2024 09:09 pmWelcome, and I am so happy that we share this rare fandom! I hope you have fun writing. : D
General likes: I enjoy the whole range from gen to porn, and like both happy and angsty stories. I like historical specificity, landscape description and attention paid to the setting in general, old-fashioned omniscient POV, canon-like writing style, loyalty, characters having conflicting loyalties.
General dislikes: Change-of-setting AU in historical canons (but I love canon divergence, and I also enjoy adding supernatural/fantasy elements to the canon setting), non-con/dubcon, infidelity, body horror. If you go with something angsty, I prefer for there to still be a meaning to the character's lives and not be unrelentingly dark.
Flight of the Heron - D. K. Broster (Ewen Cameron/Keith Windham, Ewen Cameron/Alison Grant/Keith Windham, Keith Windham & Lachlan MacMartin, Alison Grant & Margaret Cameron)
I have no specific prompts--since I've been writing so much for the fandom, I suppose I just want to read something I wouldn't come up with myself? So, here's what I love about the canon: Obviously I ship Ewen and Keith--the enemies-to-friends-to-lovers aspects, the way they are torn between their duty and their love, the hurt-comfort. Broster knew how to write fannish catnip, is what I'm saying. I also love the landscape descriptions, the writing style, the touch of the supernatural, and the historical nerdery. But I'd be equally happy to read about the gen relationships as the shippy ones! Anything about Keith & Lachlan's prickly relationship would be interesting to read, or Alison and Margaret interacting. Also, feel free to write Alison out of the story if you like, but please treat her kindly in the process.
The Wounded Name - D. K. Broster (Laurent de Courtomer/Aymar de la Rocheterie/Avoye de Villecresne, M. Perrelet & Laurent de Courtomer & Aymar de la Rocheterie, Laurent de Courtomer/Aymar de la Rocheterie)
I got really lovely fic for this last Yuletide, but hey, why not be greedy for more? I love this book in all its iddy glory: when you think it can't become any more over the top, Broster proves you wrong. The hurt-comfort, the courtroom drama, Aymar's angsty wounded honour, Laurent's devotion, it's all great. You could give me more of Aymar's POV than we get in canon. Or hey, how about an outside view of Aymar/Laurent and how extra they are about each other? You could give me the kissing or sex they're probably having in some missing scene, or you could write some canon divergence: what happens if Aymar's name is not cleared at the end? What if Aymar runs away to England (before or after the court-martial) and Laurent has to go chasing after thim? For that matter, Laurent could well be court-martialled for ditching his duty and staying with Aymar! With Avoye, you could either have her and Aymar love each other like siblings instead, or keep their romantic relationship and resolve the ending into poly. But if you do the latter, please don't lean into the sibling-like nature of Aymar/Avoye (it already almost trips my incest squick).
Jill - E. A. Dillwyn (Kitty Mervyn/Gilbertina Trecastle)
I would love to get a slashy missing scene from the book, or something set post-canon. How do they meet again? Or perhaps some fork-in-the-road AU where things went differently. Or a piece of Kitty’s POV, which the book doesn’t give us--what does she think of Jill? Or an outside POV on them. What I enjoy most about the book is Jill’s talkative and independent POV, and her huge crush on Kitty.
Kidnapped - Robert Louis Stevenson (David Balfour/Alan Breck Stewart)
A lot of the recent fic is post-canon, which I have enjoyed, but I'd love to get some unresolved (or resolved, if you like!) sexual and/or romantic tension set during the book. Perhaps one of them realizing their attraction during or after a moment of danger? An alternative prompt--if Davie goes to the continent to study, what do Alan's Jacobite friends make of them together? Or if you already have something you want to write, just go for that!
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen (Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy/Colonel Fitzwilliam)
I admit my desire for this pairing comes from having read this series and wanting Elizabeth to have her cake and eat it too! How might the three characters come together in the context of canon? Is there prior Fitzwilliam Darcy/Colonel Fitzwilliam? You can give me a glimpse of pre-relationship tension, an established relationship scene, or some turning point in the relationship - whatever you want.
Hornblower - C. S. Forester (William Bush/Horatio Hornblower)
I'd love to see Bush having to do some soul-searching--in canon Hornblower is often the one who broods, but surely Bush must do so on occasion, too. Alternatively, how about some moment of ship-related joy for them both, when they feel that it's worth it to share a ship even if they can't be together fully there? Or how about some outside POV on them--do the other officers feel that Hornblower sometimes treats Bush differently, even if he's trying not to? Or if you have something you already want to write, go for it! (I know I have infidelity as a DNW, but I'm not as sensitive about it in this fandom. But please treat canonical love interests kindly if they do come up.)
