So I have finally finished the podfic I promised [profile] ride_forever ages ago. She did me a favor and as thanks, I promised her a podfic, when I then took forever to do. *facepalm*

But here it finally is. It's a set of poems, which are themselves a complementary work for a Big Bang story with artwork. So quite a mix of mediums.

Readers: [personal profile] luzula as Ray Kowalski, [personal profile] mific as Benton Fraser, [personal profile] desireearmfeldt as Stella Vecchio, and [personal profile] serafina_b as Ray Vecchio, and bonus [personal profile] podfic_lover as Constable Lester Pearson.
Fandom: due South
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, Stella Vecchio/Ray Vecchio
Rating: PG
Length: 3 h 08 m 38 s
Author's summary: Fraser, having taken a remote posting in the Northwest Territories, corresponds with Ray Kowalski (in Chicago) and Ray Vecchio (in Florida). Meanwhile, trying to learn how to be a better pen-pal (and get some advice about his romantic woes), Kowalski starts writing to Stella Vecchio.
Notes: This has been lying around in my WIP folder forever, and now it's finally done! \o/ I'd like to highlight [personal profile] serafina_b, who had never recorded podfic before, but who stepped up and recorded the Vecchio parts with wonderful results! I think everybody is well cast, actually, and I'm very happy with the whole podfic.

Title: Throwing Pebbles
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] Heather
Reader: [personal profile] luzula
Fandom: due South
Pairing: Ray K/Stella
Rating: R
Length: 4:30:04
Summary: Ray and Stella run away and get married. Sequel to On A Balcony In Summer Air and I recommend listening to that one first, even if it's not strictly necessary.

Notes: Well hey, it's been a while since I posted podfic--I've been having a bit of a slump when it comes to being fannishly creative. This is for the due South/C6D Big Bang. I first started this podfic in June 2013, and now it's finally done. I apologize for some sound quality issues: the recordings have been done in several locations, so the acoustic surroundings are different in different parts. Also, sometimes when I've corrected mispronunciations, I've had to splice in bits which differ in acoustic surrounding. That said, this story was a joy to record! I also had pretty much the best beta ever in Heather, the author. She gives great feedback and also catches all the stuff that needs to be fixed. ♥ I usually don't work that closely with the author, but I really enjoyed doing it with this one.

Cover art for the m4b is by [personal profile] podfic_lover, who also made other cool artwork for the podfic over here. Thanks! ♥

Title: Pornography
Author: [personal profile] china_shop
Reader: [personal profile] luzula
Fandom: due South
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Rating: NC-17
Length: 2 h 20 m 27 s
Author's summary: When word gets out that Fraser has a porn collection, Canada is disgraced, Fraser's embarrassed and Ray nearly dies of curiosity.
Notes: For the due South 20th anniversary celebration! Wow, this has languished in my WIP folder for a long time. I originally intended it to be a collaboration, with another podficcer doing the Kowalski parts. But that never happened, so I finally decided to do both parts myself. The Fraser parts were recorded in a different acoustic setting, so the corrections to them stand out a little. /o\ Ah well. Thanks to [personal profile] ride_4ever for beta-listening and catching mispronunciations.

So, I have posted two Big Bangs! \o/ I actually finished the podfic about four months ago, and the fic maybe two months ago, except for some small bits at the end, so it feels weird that they are only posted now. These are old news, people! Except they're not to you, I guess. I have still not reached the point where I can re-read the fic and tell how well it works, though--I am still too close to it.

Partners In Exile (20168 words) by Luzula
Fandom: due South, Temeraire - Naomi Novik
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Diefenbaker & Benton Fraser
Characters: Benton Fraser, Diefenbaker, Bob Fraser (due South), Buck Frobisher, Gerard (due South), Ray Kowalski, Ray Vecchio, Original Characters
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Temeraire Fusion, Dragons, Partnership, Case Fic, Canonical Character Death, Episode Remix
Summary: A retelling of the due South pilot as a Temeraire fusion: When Benton Fraser's father dies, he teams up with his father's dragon partner Diefenbaker and together they chase his father's killers to Chicago.

Notes: [personal profile] mergatrude gave me the idea for this one. She said: "someone should write a modern-day dS/Temeraire fusion!" And I did. I had a lot of fun writing a gen story about Fraser and Dief (who is a dragon, obviously) and also a lot of fun with the worldbuilding. I am very grateful to my betas and cheerleaders: [personal profile] keerawa read and gave feedback on an early version, and so did [personal profile] mergatrude. [personal profile] sage helped me brainstorm at one point. Most of all, [profile] seascribe was with me all the way, reading new bits as I sent them to her, and Skyping with me to give me feedback. Finally, [personal profile] malnpudl read the whole thing at the end and gave me valuable feedback. (I hope I didn't forget anyone!) I am blessed with wonderful art by [personal profile] mific for this story; do check it out! Wow, I love it so much. ♥

Summary: Years after the movie, John has found a kind of peace. But then Billy calls, and he wants something from John.

Notes: So I also did a podfic! I love this story, and it was wonderful to record, in the kind of way that challenges and makes you grow as a podficcer. I absolutely love it when you manage to find a character voice that just works for a character, and John felt that way for me. Thanks to [personal profile] malnpudl for beta-listening! Also check out the lovely art that [archiveofourown.org profile] rose_malmaison made for the podfic! Thank you so much.

1) I posted some podfic recs over at Amplirecathon. Check out the other recs as well! I have gotten recced multiple times, which is making me happy. I am especially glad that Horseshoes and Hand Grenades got recced, because I am still so proud of that podfic. Also, there's a new podfic reccing comm: [community profile] podfic_love! Check it out. I will be reccing for them in August.

2) I forgot that I hadn't posted this in my journal, so for completeness' sake: while I was away in the mountains, there was a posting weekend for the AU challenge. [personal profile] podfic_lover and I collaborated on an apocalyptic podfic: Wars Not Yet Dreamed Of, by [livejournal.com profile] abbybanks. I am really happy with how it came out! And [personal profile] sage posted a snippet for me, with the working title of Mountie!Caroline. The premise is that Bob was shot instead of Caroline when Benton was young. Sad to say, I haven't done any more work on that since--the thing is, my Big Bang fic is also an AU of the pilot, and I couldn't hold them both in my head at the same time.

3) Speaking of my Big Bang fic (the Temeraire/due South fusion), it's now at 17,000 words, and is fairly close to being done, but I am not sure if it will reach 20K. Feel free to kick me in the butt and tell me to finish it...

4) I have already decided exactly what I want to request for Yuletide, barring new fandoms that take me by storm. Am I the only one?

Title: This Body is Someone
Author: [personal profile] lalejandra
Reader: [personal profile] luzula
Fandom: due South
Pairing: Margaret Thatcher/Francesca Vecchio
Rating: PG
Length: 27 m 37 s
Author's summary: A pair of spectacular vegan Fluevogs encrusted with ethically-mined Canadian diamonds is on display at the Canadian Consulate, and Frannie is taking point when it comes to protecting them during a party--and it's the night of her 18-month anniversary with Meg.

This was a bit of a challenge to read. Not because of the pairing, even though it's not a pairing that I've thought about much before, because the story does such a good job of making you believe in them. No, the problem was that the way I usually read Frannie didn't work for me here--I usually act out a lot when I read her. But then when I read her as a bit more toned down, it suddenly worked for me. And yeah, that makes sense, because she's a bit older here, and the story isn't about new love, but about an established relationship, and they have some problems to work out.

Fandom: due South
Pairing: Fraser/Victoria

Summary: In the end, she couldn't do it. All that planning, all the nights Victoria had spent in prison daydreaming about how she'd bring him down--when she was faced with the reality of betraying Benton Fraser, she couldn't do it. Even though he'd betrayed her, all those years ago.

Notes: In a way, this is as close as I could get to a happy Fraser/Victoria story? It's still not happy, but it's less angsty than the canon version of events.

Title: Horseshoes and Hand Grenades

Readers: [personal profile] luzula as Benton Fraser, [personal profile] crinklysolution as Ray Kowalski, [personal profile] izzady as Ray Vecchio, and [personal profile] helens78 as Frannie Vecchio and assorted other roles.
Fandom: due South
Characters and pairing: Benton Fraser, Ray Kowalski, Ray Vecchio (preslash Fraser/Kowalski)
Rating: PG-13 for violence
Length: 2 h 27 m 16 s
Author's summary: A midcentury AU, in which there are photographs, parachute troops, invasions, exploding trees, foxholes, misunderstandings, bullets, letters from home, smokejumpers, roommates, and more exploding trees. Ray Vecchio gets a lot of sand in his boots, Benton Fraser gets a little disconnected from reality, and Ray Kowalski gets to jump out of airplanes and maybe fight a war.

Notes: Thanks to the author for letting us record this! It was so rewarding, and collaboration is so much fun, and frankly, I am so proud of this podfic that I could burst. If you don't know due South, you can still listen to this, since it's an AU. Be aware that it's a story about war, though, so check out the warnings on the original story post.

The sound clips separating the sections are from all over. Many of them are from this torrent where you can download a huge collection of WWII radio news clips. I don't know how much time I spent listening to them to find ones that fit! At least I know more about WWII now? In the smokejumper sections, most of the audio is from this 1949 documentary about smokejumping (which, hey, also features a guy firmly grabbing another guy's crotch). The music used is, in order, "The White Cliffs of Dover" with Vera Lynn, "Il est Rythme" with Johnny Hess, "When the Lights Go On All Over the World" with Vaughn Monroe, "What's the Use of Getting Sober" with Louis Jordan, "Bed on the Floor" with Woody Guthrie, and finally "Cold Missouri Waters" with Cry Cry Cry at the end (the only one that isn't period music--it's about the historical event that inspired the end of the fic). The remaining sound clips are mostly from freesound, I think.

[personal profile] podfic_lover beta-listened, and also put together the podbook. There are two versions of it: one plain m4b file with a cover, and one "picturebook version" using the period photos from the original story post as chapter covers. The podbook cover was made by [personal profile] podfic_lover using [profile] caersmane's original Big Bang art for the story.

On Sunday I was browsing through old posts on my journal when I came on [personal profile] mergatrude saying she'd love to hear me read her due South F/K sonnet April 2nd, 1998. And I said I'd try to remember that for her birthday. So then I checked her profile to see when her birthday was, and it turned out to be that very day! First, I did these for the amnesty at [community profile] fan_flashworks:

For the Triangle Challenge, I recorded [personal profile] brigantine's yummy Eat Dessert First (Elaine Besbriss/Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, NC-17, 28 m 48 s)

For the Do-Over Challenge, I made a re-pod of my very first podfic (from 2007), my own story Voices in the Wind (Caroline Fraser, Benton Fraser, PG-13, 8 m 15 s). Wow, how my reading has changed. *boggles* I kind of want to take down my earlier podfics, but I suppose I shouldn't. They make me squirm uncomfortably, but I am also happy that I've learned so much over the years. Podficcing really is a craft. Also, my Caroline characterization has changed, too! I had her say Robert instead of Bob? That feels so weird to me now. And she's so lonely in this fic! *aches for her*

Also, I made this:

I have to say that the American convention of putting the quotation marks outside the period, as in the summary of the podfic above, drives me nuts. The period is not part of the episode title, augh! I mean, I mostly like American writing conventions, because I learned to write English in the US, after all, but this one makes no sense to me.
