luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
Been home sick, so lots of reading books and sorting moss specimens. Nothing serious--I suspect I got a mild case of the flu.

Nomadplaneten by Emanuel Blume (The Nomad Planet, only in Swedish)
Well hey, Swedish SF with an opening scene set in Gothenburg! : ) This was a pageturner, though when it ended I kind of blinked and went "so what actually happened there?" It is essentially big dumb object SF a la Rendezvous with Rama, but you can tell that the author also put some thought into what would happen on Earth in the next 100 years.

Konsten att hugga träd och ha skogen kvar by Mikael Karlsson (The Art of Cutting down Trees and Still Keeping the Forest, only in Swedish)
A book for promoting "close to nature forestry", specifically the Lübeck model. Fairly good, but I would've liked to see it dig down more into the arguments of people who promote the clearcutting method. As it is, it's a little bit too many glossy photos of beech trees in spring, and too few scientific references. I mean, I am on your side, book! Just...give me more of the nitty-gritty boring stuff.
