I don't really think of The Dispossessed as being an application of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, actually, at least not in its strong form. It's true that Pravic is meant to shape people's thinking, but I think the book shows us that this is not enough, that you still have to keep working at it if you want to shape society in a certain way. And I like this in the book! I tend to be skeptical of SF books which assume a strong version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis to be true (such as Native Tongue, which I recently read).
And yes, I first read The Dispossessed in my teens, and didn't really get it until I reread it in my thirties!
