I think you're right about the age thing. In the pilot, Bob looked younger than 68 to me. I always imagined that Bob and Caroline married rather young.
*nods* Martha Fraser, OTOH, didn't have Bob until fairly late, I think. There had to be time for her to go to China, establish her library, etc, before she had kids.
