Podfic meme

There's a podfic meme going around, which I thought I'd do. Also, I'm down in the south with my parents now, and might disappear from the face of the internet for a few days if the weather is right for sailing.
1. When did you first start podficcing?
Back in 2007. My first one was one of my own stories, Voices in the Wind. I started out recording on my old iRiver mp3-player (which I still use, but not for recording).
2. What would you say was your inspiration or motivation to start doing it?
Probably
zabira! I loved listening to her podfics, and then I wanted to try it for myself. She was also very helpful in beta-listening and getting me started. I actually wasn't fond of listening to podfic/audiobooks at first, and had to get used to it. I didn't like the fact that I couldn't control the pace, like I can when I'm reading. But then I learned to think of it as an entirely different medium and not the same as reading at all, and now I love it.
3. What fandoms have you podficced in?
I started out only doing due South, but I've branched out a lot since then, mostly under the influence of
amplificathon. That was the initial inspiration to do a rare fandom podfic, and I've done a lot more since then. I seem to do a lot of rarelit fics.
4. What was your favourite podfic to make or do?
Oof, I really can't answer that. There are so many!
5. Where do you draw your inspiration from for podfic?
Mostly by reading fic. I'll read something that I really love and then get the impulse to record it. I'm also inspired by knowing that people enjoy what I create, and by listening to other people's podfic, and discussing it with others. I admit that it's also become something of a habit to record podfic. : )
6. What was your least favourite podfic to make or do? I wouldn't say least favorite, because I love the fic itself, but I had some trouble with The Reaching Out One. I recorded half of it at one point, and then FRTDNEATJ I couldn't record anything for a few months, and then came Amplificathon. I finished it after that, but by that time I'd changed my reading style a bit, so that the podfic feels a bit disjointed to me.
7. Which podfic are you most proud of?
Huh, can't answer that either--there are just too many of them!
8. What's the best feedback or comment you've ever gotten? Oh, hmm. Maybe when
andeincascade said that she listened to my podfic for comfort when she went into surgery?
9. What's your opinion on music in podfic?
I don't put music in my own podfics, but I love to sing whenever the narrative gives me the chance. Otherwise, it varies. I've heard podfics where the music was used well and contributed something, and I've heard others where the music wasn't to my taste and took away from my enjoyment. I do wish people would indicate the song title and artist somewhere--it's happened that I really liked a song I heard in a podfic and could never find out what it was.
10. Favourite genre to podfic to (comedy, angst, romance, drama, AU, etc.)?
Straight-up, serious narrative is definitely what comes easiest for me, and dialogue is something I've gotten better at over the years, I think. Comedy is hard, and I have to work at it. Hmm, I think a favorite genre to record might be epistolary fic. Oh, and also fic with external narrators.
11. Favourite fandom(s) and/or pairing(s) to podfic?
Well, there's always due South, which is the fandom of my heart. But I'm also fond of 19th century British fandoms, like Sherlock Holmes and Master and Commander.
12. What just drives you up the wall when it comes to podfic?
Nothing, I think? I'm fairly easygoing.
13. What’s your podfic recoding set up like?
I record on a ZOOM H2 which has an internal memory card, and ideally I'll record from a printed-out copy to avoid computer noises. I do it in my bedroom, usually in the morning when some of my flatmates have left for work and others are still sleeping.
14. What is your latest project or idea for your next podfic (if your muse isn't dead)?
Actually I'm contemplating recording something that's not a podfic, namely Peter Kropotkin's autobiography "The Memoirs of a Revolutionary", which I plan to record for Librivox. Could be interesting to record non-fanfic for a change.
15. Finally, what kind of words of wisdom would you offer someone who wants to podfic/is a newbie?
Just the standard stuff, I think? Start with something small, get a beta to listen to your first effort. *has no words of wisdom*
