Hi, I'm back on the internet! I missed you all. Here's a journal that I kept--it's a mix of my daily work, nature observations, and opinions on books/audiobooks/movies that I read/listened to/watched. Also tiny bits of meta from my due South rewatch.

13th of June
I arrive at the research station via helicopter, together with SSG (Senior Scientist Guy), and get myself settled in my cabin. Spring is late, and there's a fair amount of snow left. There's been a dramatic slush torrent (yes, that is the technical term) down the upper length of the valley, rearranging the landscape. I watch Letting Go in the evening (I'm on a due South rewatch).

14th
Lovely sunny weather. There are continual little avalanches down the rock face on the opposite side of the lake as the sun warms it. It's about a kilometer away, so there's a three-second delay on the thundering noise. I catch several on camera. I gather snapshot phenology data (= counting flowers in various stages of development) in the Eriophorum OTC:s (= an experiment simulating the greenhouse effect--it's basically little open-topped greenhouses, together with control plots). In the evening I eat SSG's delicious pea soup, then write 500 words on my Big Bang fic.

15th
It snows overnight, and there's a cold wind blowing all day, with the temperature close to freezing. I mostly stay indoors. I record and edit some podfic, read, throw out old tinned food that expired in 2009, and watch The Tempest with Helen Mirren as Prospero (I liked her a lot, but Ariel stole my heart). I also poke at some old WIP:s and decide one of them is post-able.

16th
Sunny weather again. SSG and I walk around to find new plants that have begun to bloom (one of my tasks is to keep a list of when each plant in the valley comes into flower). I fetch in the doormats that lie out all year round to catch seeds, and put them in the lab to dry. SSG leaves in the afternoon, and I have the station to myself! \o/ I hike up to Telephone Peak to phone home, and come home with tired legs. Huh, I need to get in better shape. I finish listening to the Hunger Games trilogy, which I liked fine, but not more than that. Of course, maybe that was because the reader gave Katniss a sort of wide-eyed naivété, which, no.

17th
Cloudy. I retake various photos I took when it was sunny, because the light is better now. I love my new camera, and SSG loaned me his macro lens when he left! OMG, how did I live without one before! You guys are going to be subjected to soooo many close-ups of plants and lichens. Rain in the afternoon. I bake some bread and do various indoor tasks. In the evening I watch "North". It makes me a bit uncomfortable because Fraser going slightly nuts reads to me like PG shining through. Although I do love the bits with Ray and his dad.

18th
Weather clears up. I figure out why my hands are aching so much despite no typing--it's from handling the camera, which is heavy, and I got so into it that I didn't think about taking it easy. Will be more careful in future. I do snapshot phenology in the Cassiope OTC:s and controls. I finish Patrick O'Brian's The Truelove--I am delighted with Clarissa Oakes, and look forward to reading that long Clarissa/Diana fic. Write 450 words on my Big Bang fic. Arrrgh, why am I constantly sliding into first person and present tense? It's supposed to be in third person and past tense, damn it.

19th
Cold, cloudy, and occasionally drizzly weather. I take in more seed doormats, and set out plastic cups with glycol in them to trap insects, and take care of some old insect traps. For lunch I have tomato, squash and bell pepper stew with couscous, fried halloumi and Kalamata olives. Yum. Write 550 words on my Big Bang fic. I find that bribing myself with one piece of chocolate per hundred words is effective.

20th
A storm blows up during the night and blows all through the day. Well, storm might be an exaggeration, but it must be gale force winds at least. I am plastered with wet snow the few times I venture out, so I stay indoors, trying to ration my computer time to make the solar powered batteries last. Wind too loud for podficcing, alas. I watch "Creation", with Paul Bettany as Charles Darwin. It was good, although I didn't expect quite that level of angst. Write 650 words on Big Bang fic. Chocolate strategy continues effective.

21st
Still blowing hard, temperature just above freezing. Barometer is rising, though. I go to the lab and shake door mats to dislodge seeds, which is more time-consuming than you'd think. Also bundle myself up in my warmest clothes and do snapshot phenology in the Ranunculus OTC:s. Start listening to Farthing by Jo Walton, and wow. I mean, I knew it would be good because Jo Walton is pretty much always good, but I love the reader, too. I watch Vault. A lot to love about that episode--Frannie riling Ray up and driving the Riv at the beginning, for example. Also Fraser all wet. Write 350 words on Big Bang fic.

22nd
Midsummer. Weather better--some snow, some sun. I do snapshot phenology in the Dryas OTC:s and controls, and then go up to Telephone Peak to phone home. I finish Assembling California by John McPhee, a geology book that was a gift from [livejournal.com profile] julia_here. Enjoyed it, and wish I'd read it before my post-BP roadtrip.

23rd
Sunny; sky a perfect blue. I walk downvalley to see what's come into flower down there. The first hikers of the year come along; I dissuade them from continuing upvalley since it's still covered with snow. I take my first sauna-bath of the season--the lake ice has melted enough along the shore that I can at least get all of myself wet if I lie down. Mmmmmmm, hot sauna. Write 900 words on Big Bang fic. Ha, take that, WIP!

24th
Weather still good, but there's what looks like a jet-stream cirrus in the sky, so perhaps worse tomorrow. I get a lot done; among other things I climb 300 meters (900 feet) up the mountainside and place insect traps along the way, and do snapshot phenology in the Eriophorum OTC:s and controls. I watch Witness in the evening. The Milk Duds episode! [personal profile] podfic_lover and I actually bought Milk Duds in the US to see what they were like.

25th
Cloudy, but no rain. A lazy day. I climb Telephone Peak to phone home. Finished Farthing, which was even better than I thought in the beginning. Highly recommended--it's a murder mystery on the surface, but really about the way fascism can slowly creep its way in. Needless to say, I'm also reading tons of fic, but if I wrote about every fic I read this journal would be too long. For example, I just read Kat Allison's Xeriscape, which, wow. How come I never read that before? I also poke at an old WIP (the Victoria fic) which I'm intending to send to beta.

26th
Cool and cloudy; some wind. A guy arrives to do some repairs on the cabins; we bond over old-fashioned iRiver mp3-players. But I'm still relieved he's staying in the other cabin. *has turned into a hermit* I take in insect traps and organize the specimens. I finish reading Ursula K. Le Guin's Four Ways To Forgiveness. It's a reread, and it's just as good as I remember it from, say, 10-15 years ago. Didn't quite blow my mind the way my recent reread of The Dispossessed did, though. I write 350 words on my Victoria fic.

27th
Cold, windy, some snow. I walk downvalley, but only find one new flowering species. Repair guy hikes away in the afternoon. I watch Boot in the Chest Knife in the Wall Bird in the Hand, which is one of my favorite dS episodes ever. Oh Fraser, I love you. I love you so much. And Turnbull is delightful in this ep. Also, I want fic about Gerrard and Bob--I really can't see them being friends? *notes down sudden plot bunny* I write 200 words on my Victoria fic, and 100 words on my Big Bang fic.

28th
Snows overnight. Cold, windy, some sun. I do snapshot phenology in the Cassiope OTC:s and controls. I also hike up to Telephone Rock. I'm always warm when I get up there, naturally--going uphill will do that for you--but despite five layers on my upper body, I'm cold after an hour in the freezing wind talking on the phone.

29th
Sunny, clear blue sky. I hike upvalley and check out what that slush torrent did to the river delta. Lots of snow left up there still. I see a new species of butterfly, Oeneis norna! It's new both to the valley and to me. \o/ I watch Mask. I love Fraser and Eric dancing around each other and colluding in the end. I write 500 words of world-building and plot notes for the due South science fiction AU I will eventually write. Yay world-building! I delete 100 words on my Big Bang and write 300.

30th
Barometer low, but weather still fine. I take in insect traps and organize specimens, and do various other small tasks. I watch Juliet Is Bleeding, which is not a favorite ep of mine. Gah, the bit at the end makes me wince. Yeah, so she wanted to lead, Ray, so what? Maybe you should've let her, instead of telling her everything would be fine if you did all the leading. I write 250 words on my Big Bang. Am now over 19,000 words!

1st of July
Warm weather. Feels like possible thunder, but none arrives. The streams are full of melting snow. I climb up and fetch more insect traps, and also do snapshot phenology in the Ranunculus OTC:s and controls. I have a sauna bath, and scare the ptarmigan couple that is hanging around the sauna. Ptarmigans are adorable. I watch One Good Man, which I find sadly unconvincing, although I do like the second Mackenzie King. I write 700 words of podfic recs.

2nd
Drizzle during the day, hard wind towards evening. I do snapshot phenology in the Dryas OTC:s and controls, and do various lab work. I watch The Edge, which I love. LaCroix and Cortez are both great characters, and I love the magical realism aspects. I finish my late Mystery Birthday Present for [personal profile] malnpudl, soon to be posted. I write up some more recs and write 200 words on my Big Bang.

3rd
Hard wind, rain, snow. Another of those indoor days. I finish Chris Moriarty's Spin Control. It didn't blow my mind quite the way Spin State (the first book in the series) did, but still, very satisfying. How could I resist a clone who is an idealistic entomologist? I watch Far North, which has Michelle Yeoh, sled dogs, and Arctic landscapes. This sounded promising, but...well, it was rather brutal. Not bad, but maybe not something I actually wanted to see. *shudders*

4th
Sunny, clear blue sky--talk about a change from yesterday. I do the Eriophorum snapshot phenology. Then I hike down into the next valley below this one, to look for a rare butterfly species, Euphydryas iduna, that I think might live there--it's the right kind of environment for it. And I find it! Yay! I watch Starman (huh, I seem to have left the Eggmen episode at home). Heh, Fraser's expression and tone when Ian hugs him is priceless--no, Ian, he does not want that hug. Also, I want to tell Audrey to run the other way at the end.

5th
Last day. Weather fine. I wrap things up, write up documentation for the next fieldworker, clean the cabin, etc. Also I fetch down the last insect traps (why did I leave the ones highest up for last?). Fly down in the evening. Yay, hot showers! Cellphone coverage! Internet! Civilization does have its advantages.

I'm not going back through my entire flist/circle, so please do link me if there's something I shouldn't miss!

I enjoyed your journal! (And I enjoyed your postcard!)

I read McPhee's book on Alaska while we were road-tripping to and through Alaska in 1993. It was really fun to have that background.

I've written a couple more Eagle stories since last you were on the net (on AO3).

Welcome home, Luz, and thanks for sharing your journal; I loved reading it. It makes me want to go to the mountains with you and I can't wait to see your photos.

I've recorded my first due South fic with the Zoom. It's a ficlet that Aka wrote for Hazel's birthday. It's short but I'm super pleased with the way it came out. I feel like I have so much more flexibility with my voice when I use it and things don't feel so forced. I think you'll notice the difference. It's here:

It's great to have you back; I missed you. Let's chat soon. Oh, and thanks for my postcard! I was awesome as always.

*lots of welcome home hugs*

Yay, welcome back! I always enjoy your Adventures In Science journals. And the postcard came a few days ago. So pretty! Thank you! What a nice surprise that you'd enjoyed the Viggo/Sean story. I am a bit extra fond of that one, myself. :)

It sounds so glorious (is it really so glorious? Do you ever wake up and think "oh no, not another day counting flowers in the beautiful wilderness"?)

(Also, there's a long Clarissa/Diana fic? whereabouts?)

You sound very content. It's relaxing just reading about it.

Clarissa/Diana is unaccountably neglected! I wrote a tiny scrap of it and people said it was a fine pairing, but did they go and write more? No they did not *sighs*

It's the one femslash pairing that makes obvious sense, at least to me. It's mystifying that nobody writes it!

Hmm, let's see. WDS, so you're still circumnavigating? Best wait till you get back to shore and find out what's been happening with the womenfolk and children. There's family-type spoilers right up to the end of The Commodore.

Welcome back, and thanks (again) for sharing your journal with us. I like the combo of science and fic{writing|reading} and "real books" too.

McPhee is famous for falling in love with any landscape he explores. The Alaska book — Coming Into the Country — is definitely informative while also scream-out-loud funny. Lucky for us readers he's written around 30 books; most are available as E and audio, at least in U.S.

Recording podfic in the emptiness makes a thrill go up my spine; I see you have posted them already! Wheee! You got so much done in three weeks!
Watching FAR NORTH in a northern tent while foul weather kept you inside sounds frankly terrifying. Sorry it was an unpleasant experience. Michelle Yeoh was amazing, though?

Thanks so much for the postcard; it came at the optimum time in a very bad week when I was here alone with the livestock 90% of my waking hours, good to be reminded of real people on the planet! My husband has been in more pain than usual, and when he's home he's off in opioid painkiller land.

And thanks for that rec- I've been looking for more HCL stories lately (especially after watching John Piper-Ferguson's Flashpoint episode), and that one is so remarkably 3-D and vigorous.

Julia, if you were here we could talk about mountains and how they grow

There's another McPhee about mountains- Rising from the Plains- which addresses the paradigm shift in geological theory when plate techtonics reexplained orogeny in a more elegant way than the old theory (which had a whole lot of handwavium in the mix: "because geosynclines!") and shook up petroleum geologists. His Control of Nature is one of my Big Three recommendations, along with LeGuin's The Dispossessed and Pratchett's Nation.

I'd love to see Swedish mountains; my closest approximation so far was the headwaters of the Dee, which is in that belt of red granite which I think is also in Scandinavia and Iceland and Wikipedia suggests is the surface expression of the Caledonian Orogeny.

Julia, having mostly seen various basalts lately and gets a bit bored with that geodrama
