Swing dancing!

I went to a workshop on 1920's charleston solo dancing today! Wow, so much fun. It took a little while before I got the basic rhythm of it--the steps are in half-tempo, but you're supposed to sort of bounce up and down in full tempo. But when it finally clicked, it was so cool. There's a swing dancing club in town that does courses and dance nights with lindy hop, charleston, balboa, etc, and I hang out there sometimes.

I have this ridiculous fantasy of going swing dancing with the 1940's Ray Kowalski of Horseshoes and Hand Grenades. I think those dance styles would really suit him.

My husband and I sometimes go swing dancing. We are very good at the Lindy! (He used to teach western swing dancing - he taught me - and we are good partners.) It's a lot of fun!

I'm fairly new at swing dancing, though I've danced a lot of other stuff through the years--Swedish folk dance, for example, and also I did flamenco for four years. But I enjoy it a lot (swing dancing, that is) and hopefully will do more of it.

Oh! Ray as a swing dancer would be outstanding! Also, it's outstanding aerobic exercise and everybody's happily panting at the end.

Did they explain why it's called "swing"?

I know, right? All that energy put to good use.

No, they didn't! And Wikipedia has nothing to say about the origin of the word...maybe something about swinging back and forth?
