HCL and CanCon

zabira and meresy poked me and said I should watch Hard Core Logo right now (or, well, two hours ago). So I did. I don't know why I haven't watched it before, really--I just never got around to it.

I'm too tired for long analysis, even if I were capable of it (which I'm not). So here are some jumbled thoughts: I was really moved. And completely shocked by the ending, which was done to great effect and which I was unspoiled for. The Joe/Billy relationship was so touching, because it really felt like they had history together. Everything was so...tangled up. And fucked up. My sympathies kept shifting between Joe and Billy, and the manipulating director thing was so well done in a meta sense (but felt really cruel in the story).

If someone could point me towards some fic recs, that would be great. I'll probably start with spuffyduds long April Fools thing.

Also: CKR = so fucking hot here. Especially in the black and white shots. Yeah, I know that isn't news to anyone.

Hmm. I can't really see how there could be a sequel, though.

Also, sadly, I am canceling my trip to CanCon. I've admitted to myself that it's unrealistic travel-wise. The thing is, I'm doing fieldwork in the mountains in the north of Sweden in the summer, and finish just before CanCon. I'd have to be flown out by helicopter, then take the train for over 24 hours, sleep a night at home, and then fly to Canada the next morning. It just won't work. Or at least, I'd be half-dead with travel. : (

Aw. I'm so sorry. I would have loved to have met you. You know what, though? You're going to come to a Con at a later date, when it's more convenient.

Or! I have always wanted to visit Stockholm, so maybe someday you'll meet me there, huh? (It's probably like 12 hours from where you live... my Euro geography blows.)

In other non-news, the guitar scene? With the fake British accent. Best scene or bestest scene? (Okay, maybe not, but... very hot!)

The "touch my stump" scene. The one where Joe and Billy are sitting together all cozy at the band house and the girl gets all confrontational with them about how she heard that Bucky didn't get his legs shot off. And Billy adopts the fake British accent and says Bucky told him to "Touch it. Touch my stump." (I think I'm just attracted to the bad English accent. It's the Masterminds effect.)

Now, at least, you have a reference for all the "touch my stump"-ing in fandom. Although, come to think of it, it may have been better when it sounded dirtier.

At any rate, get saving for the next big Con. We'll expect to see you there. :)

Actually, I don't remember seeing "touch my stump" references before. Maybe I was filtering them out because I didn't get them.

I'll think about the scene when I see it again. I don't even recall the fake British accent...clearly I need to rewatch soon.

I saw HCL for the first time at Bitchin Party and was totally shocked by the ending. I sat there stunned until Mal made me join the group again.

Oh yeah, same here. It was in-fucking-credible. I sat there the whole time going OMG OMG OMG 'cause suddenly everything made sense, all the fic, all the RPS. The chemistry was incendiary as was their general hotness. And the ending!

I am soooo happy you have now seen HCL. I have a real thing about that movie. I think that of just about anything CKR has been in is some of the most nuanced acting he has ever done, and I can't get enough of their chemistry.

I can't go to CanCon, which I was considering as MY FIRST CON EVER, but I was so tempted to go so many people are coming from overseas. It just isn't going to happen for all kinds of reasons, but I just have to say....I LOVE the idea that you would have had to be rushed out of the wilds by helicopter for your date with fangirls. What a great image.

I really wanted to go to Cancon but just found it impossible with the way my life is right now...*sadface*. We'll have to have a con for those of us who haven't been able to make any of the cons, a sort of con for beginners or something...

As for HCL, there's a ficathon currently going on @ hard_core_hero plus a regular community at groupsession. I've got a bunch of HCL snippets that have come out of ds_snippets or ds_april_fools...

I am still feeling my way through the RPS thing. It's not that I have moral qualms, it's more that I'm afraid to mix up the characters and the actors in my head. Of course, this problem already occurs when you have two characters played by the same actor, which is why I stuck to only due South for a long time.

But I'm kind of curious and willing to give it a try, so please add me!

I completely understand. It took a while for me to distinguish between Hugh and Joe, in particularly (though that was partly because I hardly knew anything about Hugh for ages). So my early RPS stuff is kind of blurry in that regard. And it's probably had some spillover into my DS stuff, too. /o\
