luzulaI'm enjoying reading other people's responses to this meme! I considered not doing it in my journal since I've only done Yuletide two years (and I already posted parts of this as a comment in isis's journal), but whatever. I've also done some NYR stories, but no treats or pinch-hits--I never seem to have the time for that.
2010: This year I wrote a New Year's Resolution story to see if I felt I was capable of writing something that wasn't due South, as a test run for Yuletide. This story is based on a medieval ballad, The Twa Sisters, that my sister and I sing together (I usually sing the evil sister *g*). I wanted to rewrite it without the clear good/evil distinction between the sisters. Later, I also translated it to Swedish.

So, 2010 was my first Yuletide! I got matched on Watership Down, and my recipient wanted Hazel/Pipkin slash, which I did not quite manage, although you can certainly read that into the story if you want to. I was pretty happy with it, and I enjoyed geeking around with the rabbit language to make up new names.

2011: In 2010 I offered the song Iowa with Dar Williams because I got an instant idea for it when I saw it in the list of fandoms, but I didn't match on it. So in 2011 I wrote a NYR resolution story for it. I guess you could describe it as heartwarming femslash? My recipient never commented, though. : (

Summary: My dreams didn't come true back in high school, and I sure didn't expect they would when I was middle-aged. It isn't the sort of thing that happens.
My assigned fandom in 2011 was Left Hand of Darkness, and my recipient wanted something about what it might mean to be queer in a society where everyone is genderqueer by our standards. And right away when I read the request, an original character just popped into my head, and I wrote and wrote. And wrote. I made the decision to omit gendered pronouns for most people (the fic is in first person POV) which was a bit of a pain to work around, but I think it paid off. I'm still very happy with this story, and it got probably the most (and the most thoughtful) feedback I've ever gotten on any of my fics!
