So, an update! I have been on a week-long forest inventory camp in the north of Sweden, and had a great time. Admittedly it was very hot, but our camp was on an island and we went skinnydipping about ten times a day.

The forest we were in is threatened by a nickel mine, which is supposed to be on/in a huge hydroelectric dam (the island we were on is in the dam). And then the poisonous refuse from the mine will be stored in dams which are walled-off portions of the hydroelectric dam. The water level in the dam varies a lot, and also there are lots of towns downstream that rely on this river for their drinking water. Who thought this was a good idea?

The forest was really old and we found tons of red-listed species, so that's one more argument against the mine. I really enjoyed this camp because we had so much contact with the local resistance against the mine, mostly Sami people (the indigenous people of Scandinavia), and some of them participated in the camp, too.

I'm now in my old home town hanging out for a few days and resting (and coordinating the press release and species lists from the camp). Next up: a trip to the mountains with [personal profile] podfic_lover!
