General update

I've been home for a week or so now, and it feels pretty good. At first I was a bit downcast at the state of the kitchen (we're nine people living here right now, so it can pile up), but now we've had a house meeting and straightened things out. Tonight we put on loud party music and cleaned for two hours, and I am much encouraged. It does always feel more like a home to me when people do things together.

I was sad to learn that one of my housemates, who is an illegal immigrant from Afghanistan, got caught shoplifting and is in jail awaiting deportation. : ( He's a really sweet boy and only 18.

I'm back at work, preparing classes for the fall. Soon I will have graaaading, from the students who failed the ordinary exam and have to take it again.

It's time to admit that I won't finish my due South Big Bang in time (the fic, that is--pretty sure I can make it with the podfic). I do have 11 500 words, but I've had a writing slump in the past month. I do mean to finish it, though! I had some (probably excellent) beta advice of the "kill your darlings" type that I am not sure I will be able to follow. I mean, if I'm to find the motivation to write this, it's because there is id appeal for me, and the worldbuilding really is the appeal for me in this fic. Hmm. Do kick me in the butt and tell me to write?

Welcome home! Glad that the group cleaning thing worked out.

But I'm so sorry to hear about your housemate. That's awful! Are they deporting him to Afghanistan? I hope it works out OK for him.

Yes, he's being deported, probably (though he's been in jail for a month and there's no word on when yet). : (

My best housing experience was a former sorority filled with an hilarious assortment of kids, adults, pets and drugs. 41 H. sapiens. We had serious charts to organize the cleaning, and a very basic dish sterilizer, so very little norovirus. Anyway, cleaning en masse to loud music is the best.

That's very sad about your housemate. Was I wrong to assume Sweden would have more welcoming policies for war refugees?

41 people, that's quite a lot! I can see that would require some organization.

I dunno, Sweden's pretty liberal compared to a lot of other places. But there's a huge debate about immigration right now--it feels like society is just getting more and more polarized about it.

Write, write, write! It doesn't matter if you miss the deadline (though it is a shame) but nust so you know, I was contemplating contacting you after the BB first deadline and asking for advice, because I am writing a rather creepy 'faery tale' as opposed to fairy tale, and ypu were the first writer I could think of who might help me in that genre.

So, your writing is much appreciated, and we need more of it.

I am so sorry to hear of your housemate's plight though. Afghanistan is one of the worst desti ations on the planet. It seems almost vicious to send him back to the poorest country on earth for... I dunno. Stealing a loaf of bread. Or a dvd player even. It just seems a bit much.

I dunno, he's not being deported for that--the shoplifting was just the way the cops got hold of him. It would've been the same if they just asked for his ID on the street for some reason, since he's here illegally.
