Mission Child by Maureen McHugh
Hmm. I liked China Mountain Zhang more, I think. I can tell that it's by the same author; it has that same meandering quality where things happen like they do in a life, not in a story. Which I partly like, but also, there's a reason stories are generally not as random as life. Aaand now it sounds like I didn't like the book, but I did! Would gladly talk about it, if you've read it. If you're wondering what it's about: it's SF with a focus on colonialism and gender issues, seen through the lens of one person's life. I like that it uses the same set-up as Le Guin's Hainish novels to get people who are basically aliens to each other but still similar (because they are from the same colonizing species that got separated a long time ago).

A Stir of Bones by Nina Kiriki Hoffman
Sweet and a little bit wistful, with dark undertones (there is domestic abuse) but a hopeful ending. It's a story of a girl who finds a haunted house and also some new friends, one of whom is a ghost. There are sequels; not sure I'll hunt them down, since this is more of a children's book than I was in the mood for right now. But it's definitely a good book, if that is what you are in the mood for!
