Some good fic I've read lately
Oct. 30th, 2014 02:27 pmPretty much all of
bunn's Sutcliff fic. All of it is well written and I feel it does some things that aren't that common in the fandom.
A Marital Education by
Yahtzee (Pride and Prejudice, 13 000 words)
Darcy is impotent. This is the story of how Elizabeth and Darcy deal with that in their marriage, with a great Elizabeth POV.
Dagon's Bargain by
gehayi (Hamlet/Cthulhu, 9 000 words)
A very cool crossover, of the type that switches villains and heroes. Also good if you like world-building.
Sharpe's Dragon by
Blackdisa (Sharpe/Temeraire, 76 000 words)
I don't know Sharpe at all, but that didn't matter. If you want well-written plotty action-adventure with dragons, this is for you! I've only read part one, and am saving up part two.
(Er, Hamlet/Cthulhu and Sharpe/Temeraire are meant to be read as fandom crossovers, not pairings...)
Beyond the Mists by
carmarthen (The Eagle, 20 000 words)
The Eagle WITH DINOSAURS. I think that's pretty much what you need to know.
Praise then Darkness by
GloriaMundi (Left Hand of Darkness, 4 000 words)
Yes, I saved this up since last Yuletide. Yes, it was as good as I hoped it would be.
A clear glass window, at a sea dawn by
lionpyh (Curse of Chalion, 10 000 words)
I liked Curse of Chalion, but didn't particularly want fic for it. But this is so well written and well characterized that it grabbed me at once. If you've read the book, go read this! It's gen about Umegat. Also, I have to quote this prayer, because I loved it: You whose door has no lock, set your cuckoo’s eggs in our familiar hearts, so that we may not be too certain of limiting our love. Salt our wounds, that they may heal cleanly. God of surprise, god of presumption, tuck our tails into our mouths, so that when we go to bite our enemies, we receive as we mean to deliver.
Also, there's the due South/C6D Big Bang, which I have not started reading yet, but I'm sure there's a lot of good stuff there!

Er, Hamlet/Cthulhu and Sharpe/Temeraire are meant to be read as fandom crossovers, not pairings... needs to be captured for posterity somewhere. If I wasn't so ink-adverse, I'd say a tattoo. If I wasn't so Twitter-adverse, I'd tweet it on auto for a month.
