Insta-rec: Stand Still, Stay Silent

Stand Still, Stay Silent is a post-apocalyptic web-comic set in the Nordic countries (and drawn by a Finnish-Swedish woman), with beautiful, varied art, rich and slowly revealed worldbuilding, and interesting characters. I have not finished it yet, but on the strength of what I've seen I really recommend it! You will possibly get more out of it if you're from a Nordic country (Mora is now the capital of Sweden, with Stockholm and Göteborg gone; all the surviving Danes live on Bornholm and dream of re-conquering their lost mainland; Iceland is the civilizational hub of the world) but I really think that anyone can enjoy it. Just as a taste, here's a map of the known world.

Is anyone else reading it?

I did try the first few pages, but the story didn't grab me immediately so I kinda wandered off. Maybe I should give it another go.

I had not actually seen any fannish recs of this--it was a couple of RL friends who recced it to me. But of course I see now that it has a couple of stories in AO3...

I can see that--it does start kind of slow, with a long prologue set in our time, before it gets to the main story. I liked the prologue too, though.

Yeah, I guess post-apocalyptic stuff is inherently depressing. There's been very little onscreen death so far, though. I can report back when I've read more of it...

I usually prefer to read comics in actual books (not that I read a ton of comics to begin with) but this one really grabbed me. I hadn't seen anyone in fandom talking about it--actually it was a couple of RL friends who recced it to me.

I'm about ten pages in, after I saw mentions of it in Yuletide. I love the art, but I'm finding it hard to get into the story/figure out what's going on. That might improve if I persevere, though?

Yeah, it's a bit slow to get started with the main story. It has a prologue set in our time to set up the apocalypse thingy, and then it jumps forward 90 years in time and the main story starts.

What I'm hearing is, Skip the prologue (for us types who hate prologues) :)

Popping back to say I picked it up again last night and I'm gripped! I had to power through about half the prologue, but once the prologue characters started getting worried about things, I was IN. Pandemics and maps, woot!

Oh man, thanks for the rec! I passed the rec on to a comics BFF almost immediately - when I opened up the map page you linked, I was like, oh, well, I guess I'm reading this now! SO PRETTY. She is so amazing at backgrounds and settings and perspective and and and! (Also, the print of the language trees??? *_____*!)
