General update

1) Am no longer auditor for environmental youth organization. Woohoo! I no longer have to read endless amounts of documents and be annoyed at the board! I have done my bit there.

2) My plans for becoming more active in my union are proceeding well. I am now part of the welcoming committee for new members, and the other two people in that committee seem nice and easy to work with.

3) Will probably become one of the spokespeople for the environmental forest organization where I am on the board. It's not that I am eager to be in the media, more that I've been active a number of years, so that I know enough about the issues, and feel it is my duty to take a turn doing it. On the bright side, it's a change from being treasurer.

4) I made a podcast together with some other people! It's about an environmental forest issue, and it was fun to make, although I sound kind of stupid sometimes. It really is very different from recording podfic, where I have a set text to perform--I know how to do that. Also quite different from teaching, which is another kind of performance that I can do well. But I guess I'll get better at the podcasting if I keep at it.

5) Am quite possibly going to Russia to do forest inventories for a week this summer, in an exchange with a Karelian environmental organization. That would be cool, although I am a bit leery of it in light of what happened to the Greenpeace anti-oil activists. They were doing a lot more high-profile, controversial stuff, though.

6) There is a piano in our house, and I have started playing it. I used to play the piano 10-15 years ago, and I'm surprised how much I remember and how much I'm enjoying it. Am now mostly playing some Chopin and also Pergolesi's Stabat Mater.

7) In other house news, Very Bad Landlord will probably sell the house (although characteristically, he isn't saying when). I am not sorry to be rid of him, but it means we have to find somewhere else to live. We're seven people in the house now; four or five of us want to find someplace new together. Ack, I hate house-hunting.

8) Still unrequitedly in love. *sigh* But there's lots of other important stuff in my life. I am mostly content with that.

Are your other podcasters in the room with you?

Some of the multi-person 'casts I listen to sound like folks are speaking to each other instead of to me the listener. The better ones sound like they're speaking over the phone (probably the net) to each other, which helps some with turn-taking.

Does the very bad landlord's sneaky house move mean you can shed some less-ideal roommates?

The piano playing sounds wonderful! How lovely to be able to make music again. (Not that singing isn't making music, but it's different.)

The one time I've done podcasting so far, we were in the same room. I actually like it when people sound like they're having a conversation, though? I find that format engaging to listen to--as long as that conversation doesn't become too internal, and as long as they're talking about interesting things. If they get side-tracked from their subject and talk about how one of them is really into cross-fit training (actual example), then no thank you.

Yes, I think so! The one I like least (not because he's unpleasant to talk with, but because he's very bad at doing housework) wants to move in with his girlfriend instead. I pity the girlfriend, though. And another who is really not engaged with the rest of us (I barely see her around) is also aiming to move out. But the rest (whom I like) seem to be staying.

Sorry to hear about living situation - hope you find a new place to live with the people you want to live with, and it's not too expensive or too much of a hassle!

It's been so long since I've been in love/lust with someone that I should maybe worry, but I really don't miss being unrequitedly in love - hope it's not too painful an ordeal for you <3

Thanks. It's kind of weird, because it was not an experience I missed while I didn't have it (I hadn't been in unrequitedly in love in maybe 13 years) but now that I am experiencing it, I don't even want it to end. Sure, it's frustrating, but even so I am experiencing the feelings in themselves as something positive. So they're obviously self-reinforcing even though I get no encouragement. I guess I do get feedback from meeting my crush, though (we are friends but live in different places, so we meet maybe three times a year or so, with some email/phone contact in between). If I really wanted it to end I guess I could avoid contact with him.

We are looking at a place tomorrow, but it is not at all certain that the landlord would accept our one dog and two cats. Also I wish the place was bigger. Oh well, we'll see.

Yes. And I feel like I can't keep bringing this up to my friends, either. Like, I've talked it through with some of my close friends, but now it's been one and a half years, and I still feel this way. I should probably be over it, but I don't even want to be over it. But I do not want to be the person whose conversations don't pass the Bechdel test (although no, that's not fair; I talk with them about tons of other things).

Well, that's what we're good for on DW, I think: you can talk about it with us without us getting sick of it. I mean, yeah, time's gone by, but I suspect a lot of the folks in your DW circle would object to the notion of "should" being applied to emotions! You feel what you feel, you know?

Aww, thanks. I dunno, maybe I'm more influenced by the message from the surrounding society that single people should actively be on the lookout for a partner (and should thus get over unrequited feelings) than I like to think. Which is silly, I know! I am fine being single, in general. I do have a lot of feelings for this particular person and want to be not-single with him, but since he's not interested, then I'm not really looking for someone else.

Yeah, I'm not doing it alone; we're looking for places together. Although Mom keeps sending me links to places she thinks I should be interested in that I'm not, and urging me not to move together with my housemates. I dunno, she thinks they're not good enough for me or something. *rolls eyes*
