The Raven and the Reindeer by T. Kingfisher (2016)
For my fannish book club. This is a retelling of the Snow Queen, and we all liked it! I was frustrated in the beginning because I thought it was going to play the Kay/Gerta straight (as it were) but thankfully it didn't. Once I realized that, I could lean back and enjoy it. The animals really steal the show! I could read it just for the raven, the reindeer, and the otters.
So I usually review book-length fics the way I do published books, but it's hard to know where to draw the line length-wise (for example, the book above is pretty short). Let's just write up some of those borderline ones...
The Cormorant by
pallas_or_bust (2016)
This is an Aubreyad AU where Napoleon invades England, but there's a narrow focus on how it affects Jack and Stephen. I really appreciated it for keeping their relationship as a close and intense friendship, rather than a romance. If you are into hurt/comfort, you'll probably enjoy it.
And I Alone Have Escaped To Tell You by
astolat (2017)
All I knew of Transformers going in was that it's a TV show about robots that transform into things. But whatever, it's Astolat, so I gave it a try. And yeah, I was quickly hooked, and I could figure out I needed from context. If you are into competence and loyalty, you'll probably enjoy it.
