So in 2016 I was in a contest where you were supposed to see as many species as possible during the year; this is how I did. I thought it would be interesting to see how many new species I saw in 2017 that I didn't see in 2016. And the answer is: actually a fair amount! Some of them are fairly common species I "should" have seen, others are more rare.

Vascular plants: 62 plants not seen in 2016, of which 24 are new to me (in 2016 I saw 888 species). A fair number of these were from a very cool national park I went to.

Mosses: 29 species not seen in 2016, of which 20 are new to me (in 2016 I saw 302 species). I do love mosses.

Lichens: Ha, only two species not seen in 2016, but one of them was a pretty cool find (in 2016 I saw 202 species). Clearly lichens were not my focus in 2017.

Fungi: 17 species not seen in 2016, of which 15 are new to me (in 2016 I saw 235 species).

Birds: 5 species not seen in 2016, of which 3 are new to me (in 2016 I saw 123 species). I am just not good at birds.

Amphibians and reptiles: 1 new-to-me species (the lovely sand lizard!) In 2016 I saw 9 species.

Mammals: Two species not seen in 2016, of which one new to me (in 2016 I saw 9 species). Mammals, also not my specialty.

Invertebrates: 144 species not seen in 2016, of which almost all are new to me (in 2016 I saw 435 species). I guess this is the largest increase. 90 of these are moths and butterflies, which is not surprising since that is what I especially focused on during 2016. Of the rest, 22 are beetles, 8 are flies, 6 are hymenoptera.

In total: 263 species not seen in 2016, as compared to 2220 species in 2016.
