Have now spent a week in a small cabin with my parents, one week to go. I definitely don't regret it, and I appreciate many aspects of their company, but there are times when I have to retreat into my own room and put headphones on so I don't hear them talking.

My dad asked me today when I'm going to grow out of my leftist opinions. Yes Dad, I know you were briefly a Trotskyist when you were seventeen, and your opinions have changed since then, but I'm almost forty. It is not a youthful phase. *rolls eyes*

My dad would be the same way, had I not put a stern moratorium on political discussions when we're around each other. When are you going to grow into caring about other people, parents.

My late parents once told my then boyfriend that he couldn't possibly really hold left-wing views, because his father was a university lecturer, so it must all be a pretence. He climbed out of a window to get away from them... which is not an option with one's own parents, sadly.

My dad moved from his Trotskyist views into Mindfulness (via Sartre, of all people). Maybe you could gift yours a copy of "Mindfulness" by Mark Williams and Danny Penman?
