luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)

I'm in a hostel in a tiny fishing village, and there is high speed wireless internet. I approve of this. : ) I mean, I do like traveling alone, but I also want to talk to people about what I see, which is why I'm posting again.

My god, the landscape is beautiful here. Like, literally breathtaking. Everything is black mountains and white patches of snow and shades of pale yellow and green, and then there's the sea, with the eiders floating on it like fat little black-and-white corks.

I've realized that it kind of bothers me that I have to speak English to communicate with people here. I mean, I've always thought of Iceland as being a fellow Scandinavian country. Swedish, Norwegian and Danish are mutually intelligible, and when I travel in Norway, say, I don't feel like a foreign tourist--I feel the same way as when I travel in Sweden. And I thought I'd feel the same way here, too. But I don't, and it bothers me a little, especially since so much is similar in the landscape and nature here (well, except for the whole volcanic part).

Also, today I saw a black-tailed godwit, which I've never seen before!
