The Gleam in the North by D K Broster (1927)
This is the sequel to Flight of the Heron, and I really can't say much about it here. For reasons that are in themselves spoilers for FotH, it's a bit painful to read. That said, it's pretty much invaluable if you want to write fic for FotH, because it has so much relevant background material, most especially Keith's family. I'm glad there's so much about them; it's really helpful for my writing. And in general, I also ended up actually enjoying the book for itself a lot, despite, well.

No use going into specifics, though, even under a spoiler cut, because very few people on my reading list would be interested. But [personal profile] regshoe, let me know when you've read it so we can talk about it! (Oh, and wait till you get to the SHEER WTF-ERY with Keith's mother...*boggles*)

In other news, my fic is at 15,000 words and far from done. This will probably end up the longest thing I've ever written (and that's not even counting the 3,600 words I already posted that's just the first part of this same story). I am very much enjoying the writing process, though newfound fannish obsession is unfortunately making me sleep badly. Falling asleep at night works fine, but then I wake up too early in the morning because my brain is processing fannish emotion and working out story ideas. I would really like to sleep, please. Also, I'm still having difficulties reading other fiction, but I've got three research books lined up, besides my reread of FotH, so I guess that's fine.

I feel a bit ridiculous. But hey, as Dan Savage says, you gotta feel your feelings.

Oh dear, Gleam in the North sounds both so very painful and so very worthwhile. I will get to it eventually (when I finish the dozen or so history books about the Jacobites currently on my to-read list, probably :P)

And I'm glad the fic is going so well!

you gotta feel your feelings Absolutely—it's what I love about fandom, really, that it's somewhere you can feel all these feelings about brilliant obscure things like FotH without being seen as ridiculous. And it's great fun (although I hope your sleep improves!)

Aww! One of my colleagues asked me the other day about the book I was reading on my lunch break, and didn't know anything about the Jacobites, so I tried to explain the whole situation as well as my fandom interest. I don't think I did a very good job of it, oh well :P

I tend to avoid non-fandom reviews of books I love because I can get a bit 'someone is wrong on the internet!!' about them, but perhaps I'll have a look! That's very cool that someone descended from the actual Camerons found the book and loved it :D

The Gleam in the North, ouch, that's the one I don't reread much because oh it hurts so much at the end, even more than the end of FotH. The Dark Mile is much sweeter and more satisfying as a reread, if you've got to that one.
