Replying here instead (I unscreened the anonymous comment). : ) I just dived into this history stuff because I fell in love with FotH, not because I had any prior interest in the period, so there are no doubt big holes in my understanding! I did spend some time on Wikipedia to understand just the broad outline of what was going on in the 1600's, for background. But hey, the history stuff is fun, and I'll keep reading as long as I find it so. I've started on Maggie Craig's book about the women of the '45 now, and it's interesting that women seem in some ways to have had more freedom then than later in the 19th century.
