What if Keith, after having tended to Ewen at Beinn Laoigh, met another messenger on his way to Perth, going the other way? They could exchange despatches and both turn back, to save themselves some time. And then Keith would come through Guthrie's camp again and find him torturing Ewen.

I just don't know where it would go from there. Keith challenges Guthrie to a duel? Obviously there is a good potential for hurt/comfort. But I am happy to turn this one over to someone else, if you have a better idea for how to continue. : )

Ooh, there's an idea! I suppose swapping messages wouldn't be too irregular a thing to do, if it was another officer who could obviously be trusted. And this book could always do with more hurt/comfort scenarios :D I can't immediately imagine quite where the plot would go from there, but it's a good thing to think over...

Ha ha, yes, more hurt/comfort is always a good thing. Well, you can think over and see if it sparks anything... : )

Very nice scenario! I can quite imagine Keith basically destroying Guthrie's camp, like the wrath of God. And then having to work out what to do with the injured prisoner.

Well, but there are a fair amount of other soldiers there, and Paton at least dislikes Guthrie's methods! I suppose Keith might very well challenge Guthrie to a duel. If Guthrie dies in the duel (maybe they do it with pistols), then Keith would be the ranking officer, and could take over, but I reckon this whole scenario would get him court-martialled!
