I first started writing this in September of last year, and it's probably the longest story I'll ever write. I am very grateful to my beta reader
garonne, without whom this story would not have existed. ♥ She is the audience for whom I wrote it (besides myself, obviously). If it gets other readers, that will be a bonus, but if not, that's fine. Thanks to
solo for translating into Gaelic and Scots, and to
garonne for translating into French. The summary is partly taken from the prologue of Flight of the Heron.
I am happy to have done Alison justice in this story, and more generally to have written a FotH story that genuinely passes the Bechdel test. I miss her now that I've started writing a story that is just Keith/Ewen! But no doubt I'll return to her in other stories. To be fair, she's probably my own character now as much as Broster's, since she doesn't have much page time in the book.
I also enjoyed writing a poly story which takes a lot of time and care over the development of the relationships, and to portray friendship between two people who share a partner, since the latter is part of my own experience of poly relationships. But note that there is infidelity from both sides between Catherine (the OFC) and her husband, who are stuck in a loveless marriage.

Summary:
Ewen and Alison sat there silent down by the loch, looking at happiness: both the happiness which they knew now, and the greater, the long happiness which was coming to them in marriage—as stable and secure in their eyes as the changeless mountains round them.
But, though it was true that they would find such happiness, they could at that moment see little of the complexities of love, nor how their marriage could encompass much more than they ever expected.

Date: 2021-07-11 06:02 pm (UTC)I've fixed the tag.

Missing characters you've been writing about is such a satisfying, if bittersweet, sensation--having gotten to know them so well.

Date: 2021-07-12 09:42 am (UTC)I think a lot of the motivation for me to write new stories is to explore different character dynamics. My first two longfics were both Keith/Ewen, but they were quite different. And with this one, where Ewen is married to Alison, there's obviously quite a different dynamic between Keith and Ewen as well, which I very much enjoyed writing.
And now I've started on my fourth story, which is a continuation of the first one. It will explore an established relationship between Keith and Ewen, which is put under strain by the events of Gleam in the North!

Also, I really like the title you went with.

Glad you like the title--I think it's better than my first idea, even if it's just a slightly tweaked version of it.
