New subscribers: I don't usually post this often! It's just because of my trip...

Today we hiked from Fort Augustus partway to the Corrieyarrick Pass on the old military road, and then back again. I cannot imagine how the Jacobite army walked all the way from Invergarry (from which we took a bus!) up to the pass! *boggles* The military road is still clearly there, though new gravel has been put on it, which I thought was a pity. Though no doubt General Wade is just happy it's being kept up well. Here is a well-preserved bit of it, that we didn't get to see.

The vascular plant flora of Scotland is remarkably like Sweden, and I've only seen a few new-to-me plants. One of them is the great woodrush, Luzula sylvatica! Nice to see a new namesake. And once you got away from the spruce down in the Great Glen, I quite liked the higher heathlands.

This is the inside of the decaying Invergarry Castle, that we looked at yesterday. Er, I can't say it appeals to me as a place to live, even if I imagine it whole again... I had Keith and Ewen be here together in a scene in this AU.

Here's where we got on Wade's road! The difficult-to-read bit says you will be prosecuted if you damage it.

We walked past this place which is called Culachy House, and I went, hmmmm, where have I heard that before? It's the bad guy (insomuch as the book has one) of Naomi Mitchison's The Bull Calves! Though there it's spelled Kyllachy. Borlum, where Black William from the same book lives, whose father was a military leader in the '15, is also close by.

Wade's road leading up towards the pass.

Here's where we turned round. Not all too far in this direction must be the glen where Keith saved Ewen from being shot by the redcoats...

I am really super jealous of your trip. Scotland looks so gorgeous in pictures and my grandmother's father and uncle came over from there (possibly by stowing away on a ship, dunno why...)

Beautiful photos, even though there are no Romans and I don't know this fandom. ;)

Ahh, such lovely scenery-- and I can imagine it must be very exciting from both a historical and fannish perspective to walk along Wade's road! :D (New subscriber here-- thought I'd say hello)

Oh wow, those are stunning photographs! And I'm glad you got to meet your botanical namesake (or one of them). I'm afraid to ask why the castle is pink, but glad to see Naomi Mitchison come up, it's definitely her country.

The last pic in particular is exactly how I imagined it - bleak.

I have been driven through the Monadhliadh mountains several times, and honestly I've never seen them looking quite as bright and cheerful as in your pic - and it's still bleak.

I love those pictures. The last one is gorgeous and I shall have that in mind next time I reread Flight of the Heron :D

The castle pic is interesting! I shouldn't like to live that either, but it looks fascinating.

The one in my icon is Luzula pilosa.
Nice. (I always think of your DW name as a diminutive of Luz or Lucia, so it's good to be reminded of its elegant botanical derivation!)

Have you read that Mitchison book? I do recommend it
I have actually not read any of Mitchison's fiction, as opposed to her diaries and autobiographies (which I love). It's about time I did.
