I did a whole lot more writing yesterday - an entire 1100 word fic from scratch! normally I start things but don't finish them, but this one came complete with an ending - and this morning I have spent some time editing it.

Sorry I'm starting the month with missing the first day already... but the last days have been crazy. I just read about your covid exposure and am glad you don't have any symptoms yet! Keeping my fingers crossed for you. ♥
Day 1: 618 words, 124 for WIP #3, the rest is drawer fic - after the frantic writing of my challenge entries and finishing NaNo it's been rather relaxing doing this. *g*

Good job writing! I have never really understood this drawer fic thing... is yours something original, or is it fannish? And does it feel too self-indulgent to post, or what?

Drawer fic is likely to be different for everybody; some also use other names for it (which I currently can't remember, /o\ although I lately heard a term that fit much better), but it's essentially fic you don't want to share for whatever reason. Mine are both/all of it, original, fannish, crossovers, also crossovers in-between them, and the reason they're drawerfic might be different for separate fics. Sometimes I just need to write a quick fix-it for something I've seen or read elsewhere, or which annoyed me at another fic, and I just need to get it out of my head without the intention to make more of it. Often a drawer fic consists of just short scenes or fragments, or isn't more than a first draft, as I want to write down or work out something but don't have the time or energy to make more of it. Sometimes I want to indulge in extreme hurt/comfort or woobie fluff which are guilty pleasures of mine and/or work as coping mechanism when I'm overwhelmed or in emotional distress, but to write those for publishing would need too much of an effort for it to make it doable, or I simply don't have the spoons or time for it. Sometimes it's also something I want to write _now_ but can't be bothered to research or properly develop, or know that it won't work within canon but would be too much of an effort to make a plausible AU out of it because I just want to write that down. Or it's a kind of extended scene to something I wrote for publishing with details I wanted to include but which don't fit any longer. Part of what I wrote as drawer fics in the past has made it eventually into fannish stories, or is growing into origfic which might grow to be more one day, and since several years I'm also using drawer fics to work at improving certain writing skills, or to experiment.
It all boils down to writing totally free as nobody is observing me and there won't be anybody possibly giving concrit or worse, and I can just indulge in the sheer fun of writing withouth having to pay attention to anything. Like a children's sandbox, if you will.

Or wait, actually I have once, but it was a special circumstance: I had a crush on someone IRL that I knew wasn't going anywhere and wrote a short self-insert story about that to get an outlet for it… That is certainly something I would never show to anyone.

I wrote 200 words and finished my Yuletide treat, after which I edited it and sent it off to beta! \o/ Now I have to decide whether to attempt another Yuletide treat, which I have an idea for, but in that case I would have to review canon first… so in any case I can't start writing it tomorrow. Which means that I should resume work on my longfic.

I do also have another idea for a fic, which it would be fun to give someone as a Yuletide treat… but the problem is that nobody has requested that canon (though it was nominated). I suppose one can’t give something as a Yuletide treat to someone who has not requested the canon, even if one knows for a fact that they would be delighted to receive it?

I've seen people treat in Yuletide to people who weren't even signed up for Yuletide (but am not knowledgeable enough to be able to say whether there were problems/backlash from that).

On Day 2, I wrote our annual poem that we put in our holiday cards. That came in at 250 words.

Day 2: Wrote a slightly different sketch for this fic! It is better now! I need Names for some OCs/worldbuilding things, but the structure works and I am pleased. (Of course, then I need to expand it into Actual Scenes, but... that's easier when I have the basics already there!)

I often do that too! I mostly use outlines when I'm trying to figure out if a story works, or if I need to take notes about what I want to do so that I don't worry about forgetting, or if it's just long/complex enough that I can't hold it all in my head to begin with. :)
