Oh it was great fun, don't get me wrong. Just very *silly* fun. And yesssss! the disgruntled grunts would DEFINITELY have an opinion on Aymar and Laurent, and also an opinion on their snobbish author who didn't let them *have* opinions (not even at the trial, where witnesses were desperately needed but no one thought of asking the actual soldiers!)
I've not climbed Ben Nevis, because it's very busy and a bit of a tiresome plod by all accounts, and there are lots of pleasanter walks nearby. I might if I went back in good weather, though. (See my comment on AO3!)
