I think certainly just reading the Wikipedia article would give you enough to enjoy them! I've found myself that you can often enjoy a book on different levels--like, I read Naomi Mitchison's The Bull Calves before I got into my current 18th century fandom, and enjoyed it on the level of character interaction and writing style, but I did find it rather like one of those SF/F bricks where you have to figure out the worldbuilding as you go. And then I reread it after having learned a lot more about the history, and it was a whole different experience.
