Trick or Treat Exchange?
Sep. 3rd, 2024 05:18 pmAnyone doing
trickortreatex? I'm planning to do it; you only commit to writing a minimum of 300 words, after all. You can match on either characters or relationships, and receive/offer fic or art. Nominations close on the 8th. Probably I will nominate my usual fandoms, let me know if you want to coordinate.

Date: 2024-09-03 05:12 pm (UTC)Hm, request three fandoms and offer four. That should be doable, and I wouldn't have to worry about having a legal match, if you're signing up, too.
Last year, I requested:
Alison Grant
Ewen Cameron
Keith Windham
Ship: Ewen Cameron/Alison Grant/Keith Windham
Ship: Ewen Cameron/Keith Windham
Were you thinking of adding anyone to that? Is there anyone else who you think particularly cries out for a ghost story or its ilk?
What other fandoms are you nominating?

Date: 2024-09-03 06:14 pm (UTC)Hmm, Lachlan does cry out for a ghost story. Which has been written already, of course, but that ought not to stop anyone. I'd add him to the list.
Other things I might want to request, most of which are just my usual fandoms: Mr Rowl (which of course you read recently!), The Wounded Name, Jill, Kidnapped, Hornblower. Hmm, and also Pride and Prejudice (Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy/Colonel Fitzwilliam), I think.
Honestly though, it feels a little strange to be contemplating other fandoms, since I'm so focused on writing my current longfic at the moment. But surely I can manage 300 words of fic.

Date: 2024-09-03 06:24 pm (UTC)I can nominate Hornblower, if you like. Last year I had:
Horatio Hornblower
William Bush
Ship: William Bush & Horatio Hornblower
Ship: William Bush/Horatio Hornblower
Anyone you want added to that? I'm trying to think of who begs for a ghost story -- perhaps Captain Sawyer or Midshipman Wellard from Lieutenant?

Luz: Jill, Wounded Name, Mr Rowl, P&P.
Sanguinity: Heron, Hornblower.
Garonne: Kidnapped (and the others she mentioned).
Besides what other nominations we might have.
Re: Hornblower, I feel certain there are plenty of ghost stories already written for the next instance in the series which I have not yet read...perhaps I ought to do so before the exchange. I do remember Captain Sawyer from Lieutenant (yes, he might be a scary ghost!), but I'm ashamed to say I have forgotten Wellard. I suppose, as long as the recipient has requested Hornblower and/or Bush and they're included, the writer is free to include whatever other characters they want.

Date: 2024-09-04 03:03 pm (UTC)It seems likely, certainly!

He is one of the many midshipmen who do not survive the series.

Yup, so long as one wants Bush or Hornblower as central characters to the story.

Date: 2024-09-04 03:17 pm (UTC)Not about the Navy, but I suppose army ensigns were sort of the equivalent of midshipment, and I remember when reading a book about redcoats that the enemy aimed at the regimental colours, so it was very dangerous to be the ensign holding them. At one battle, THIRTEEN successive ensigns were shot down doing so. *boggles*

Date: 2024-09-04 03:45 pm (UTC)In Naval battles of the era, the death rate of the command officers tended to be high, because each combatant would station snipers in the fighting tops to try to eliminate the other ship's command. This was relatively easy to accomplish because 1) the officers wore distinctive, easy-to-recognize uniforms, and 2) the officers considered it cowardly to hide from the snipers. Lord Nelson was one of many who died from anti-officer sniper fire.

Date: 2024-09-08 11:52 am (UTC)Just today, I was thinking how Miles Vorkosigan (as Admiral Naismith) seems to go on an awful lot of field missions, whereas realistically, I was thinking that surely the senior officer of a mercenary fleet wouldn't. And I decided to chalk it up to artistic license, just like in all those SF TV series where the senior officers are constantly going on away missions instead of staying on their ship/at base/whatever (Star Trek, Stargate, etc.).
But actually, now that I read your comments, it occurs to me that one could instead argue that it's a throwback to the 1800s! It certainly never shocks me when Hornblower goes on field missions instead of staying on board ship.

Date: 2024-09-03 06:56 pm (UTC)A 300-word minimum is certainly very tempting!
If
sanguinity is nominating Hornblower and Flight of the Heron, and you are nominating The Wounded Name (?) then I think I will nominate Patrick O'Brian, Frontier Wolf, Worrals, Kidnapped.
