Life update

1. Am writing grant application. I hate writing grant applications with the fire of a thousand suns. Possibly this means that I am in the wrong line of work. Anyway, this is for a four-year research grant, and last year, 11% of applicants were awarded grants. *sigh*
2. Big Bang is now at 17,000 words. Hmm, I am wondering what is meant by "rough draft" (as in, the one that's due 7th of April). I'm pretty sure I can get above 20,000 words by that time, but I'm not entirely sure I can get the epilogue worked out to my satisfaction. Is it enough that I'm over 20,000 words, or must it be a complete first draft?
3. I emailed old friends in Seattle to see if I could visit with them when I'm in town for Bitching Party. I was friends with a girl in my class when my family lived in Seattle (I was about ten years old) and I flew over to visit their family a couple of times after we moved back. But we haven't been in contact for years. Anyway, her mom emailed back and called me "her Swedish daughter" and said I could stay with them the whole time if I wanted. I almost got tears in my eyes. &hearts
4. I had my dad and my sister visit over the weekend. \o/
5. I seem to be the only one who likes Firefox's new tab behavior.

Date: 2010-03-16 11:49 am (UTC)It has to be over 20k, and it has to be together enough you can write what isn't done in the time you have until submission (if you have missing scenes and you know what they are, it would be helpful to your artist to have placeholders like
but even that's not necessary - just 20k and a draft that you're capable of having complete by the submission date.

Date: 2010-03-16 01:40 pm (UTC)My heart always sinks when I see things like "11% of applications successful". I find it helps to think, okay; a lot of people I know don't have a clue how to write a grant application anyway, that's 10% gone. Some people will apply for any grant going, no matter how relevant it is to their research, that's another 10%. Some people send their applications in late, or incomplete, or covered in tea stains, that's another 10%. Seriously, your chances are probably a whole lot better than you think.

Date: 2010-03-16 03:04 pm (UTC)Yay you get to visit friends! I keep finding more Seattle-based folk to see while I'm there, which is lovely.
And hey, what would you think of our room hosting the cupcake party Friday night? I said maybe we could but only if you and Ande are okay with it (I am ALL about the sugary goodness!)
HUGSHUGSHUGS!
