Dogsledding question + Fraser/Smithbauer ficlet

Does anyone want to know anything in particular about dogsledding? On Friday, I'm leaving to go on a week-long dogsledding trip where we get our own team of dogs to drive (and I am so excited about it). I promised to make a post on ds_workshop about it afterwards. So, what do you all want to know about dogsledding?

SLED DOGS. OMG.

I always wonder what they do when they're off duty - do they just sack out because they're tired, or do they do normal dog things, or do they do Special Dog Team Things? And do their drivers pet them or are you supposed to be all professional and hands off? I'd also be interested in what they eat and drink, because I've read several sources saying several contradictory things.

I want to know, um, everything. Equipment, driving technique, relationship to the dogs, how long/far can they go in a day, aren't a lot of them mixed-breed dogs, etc. Pretty much everything.

Do you carry all the dog food with you on the sleds? What do the dogs eat? How are the dogs bedded down for the night?
