Er, I actually did the opposite of my first impression and what people were advising me what to do based on that. I was feeling more and more that the second place I visited wasn't really right for me, so I called the first place again and asked if they'd found someone else yet. They hadn't, so I went there and had dinner with them tonight. I'd felt the first time that I hadn't connected with them, but that went much better now that we sat down and had a meal together. They were actually really nice, and the house felt perfectly okay too. I think now that my first impression of that place was skewed because I was feeling generally homesick and miserable.

Gah, my mom has such different priorities from me. She was all "but think of the beautiful herringbone parquet floors at the other place!" when I'd told her. I mean, I genuinely could not care less what the floors are made of, as long as the social climate feels good.

So! I have a home! \o/ Wow, I feel so relieved.
