Yuletide nominations!
Sep. 20th, 2014 07:20 pmThe brainstorming and fandom promotion posts on
yuletide have passed me by, sadly (I only subscribe to the admin journal). But anyway, I am doing Yuletide, and I hope it can get me excited about writing again!
So. Three nominations. I want to recycle three of my requests from last year:
- Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon (Paksenarrion gen)
- the 1978 Papillon movie (Henri "Papillon" Charrière/Louis Dega)
- The Charioteer by Mary Renault (Andrew/Laurie)
and I have a new request for this year: Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series, specifically Thendara House (Magda/Camilla or Magda/Jaelle). There's no fic about them at all, so I'm pretty sure I need to nominate that one myself, and also Papillon. I am not sure whether to nominate the whole of Darkover, though, or just that book? The new Yuletide rules don't allow series that don't share enough characters/setting, such as the Hainish Cycle, and I guess that could apply to Darkover, so I'll play it safe. I guess the wranglers can always syn Thendara House to the main Darkover tag later. ETA: Okay, someone just told me about the MZB child abuse thing, which passed me by because I was away from the internet large parts of the summer. Will think about that nomination some more.
Paks has been nominated in the past by other people, and so has Charioteer, so I'm holding off on those for now and hoping someone else will nominate them. *goes to make comment in the nominations post*
Since we get 3-6 requests, there are a couple of other fandoms I would consider requesting if they happen to get nominated by someone else: The Dispossessed and Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, 3:10 to Yuma (2007) (Ben Wade/Dan Evans or Ben Wade/Dan Evans/Alice Evans), Deadwood (Jane/Joanie).

Well, obviously I think so! It's a coming-of-age story about a woman who's a soldier, modeled on Christian stories about saints, though there are also obvious traces of Dungeons and Dragons-style gaming. It's pretty gritty, with one torture-and-rape scene (which I think is handled well, though obviously YMMV). Paks (the main character) is asexual and aromantic, though I never thought about it that way the first time I read the book, not being familiar with the terms back then.
ETA: When I say gritty, I don't mean in the grimdark way. There's lots of details of soldiering, and some pretty bad things do happen to the characters, but it's ultimately a hopeful story and I don't see it as dark overall.
