luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
I have nothing fannish to offer right now, but like many others of you, I donated money to Haiti (via Medecins Sans Frontiers). Also, because it's a cause dear to my heart, I donated to an organization that buys up threatened old growth forest in Sweden. (If you're new to my flist, you might not know that I've spent years working with forest conservation issues in Sweden.)

Also, have a picture of contented sled dogs (click for a bigger picture). )

So, I'm reading a lot of Patrick O'Brian and polar exploration and stuff right now, and they're always using sextants to determine where they are. I got a sudden desire to try it. I asked my housemate the military officer, but they apparently don't have any old sextants lying around at his regiment. Probably because they're army, not navy (although they do have an old apparatus for measuring distance by triangulation).

Uh, has anyone on my flist used a sextant? I am this close to buying one on the Swedish equivalent of eBay.
