Arrgh, I can't decide.

Okay, so I've got a decision to make, and maybe if I write it down, it'll become clearer. I've been apartment-hunting for some time in the city I'll be moving to for my post-doc, and nothing. Then suddenly, two good options turned up at the same time. Yeah, I know, it's a win-win situation and I shouldn't complain. Anyway:

Alternative 1:
Big house where we'd be renting one pretty big bedroom. Lots of communal rooms (including a sauna), four other people in the same house. A big forest right outside the door. Starts at January, which is just when we have to move. The guy I spoke to sounded okay, but not like a terribly exciting person. OTOH, there'll be three other people there.

Alternative 2:
Another communal house, where a friend of ours whom we really like lives. This won't start until February, so we'd have to find somewhere else to live for a month. Not as much communal space, but we'd get two rooms to ourselves, which could be good. Maybe 15 minutes walk to that same forest.

Both have low rent and are close to the university, so that's not an issue.

Arrgh, we really have to decide this soon. Maybe if I sleep on it.

The two-roomer. No question. As cool as it is to share a lot of space and everything, it's better to have your own space where you can spread out and get away from people when you need to. Stake a claim, as it were. Like, when you're grading and whatnot, do you really want to take the risk that someone is playing music and you'll be relegated to your bedroom... where your lovemuffin might already be?

Plus, it'd be kind of nice to be with a friend as opposed to four strangers. And 15 minutes to the forest is nothin'. My closest nature is... very far away.

The only downside is the February thing, but if you don't have a ton of stuff, I guess you could sublet until then.

Yeah, you have a point. But we ended up going with the first option. The reason is that it wasn't 100% clear that the rooms in the second option would become available, and we had to say yes or no to the first one. My nerves weren't up to stalling any more.

Anyway, we'll be fine. We've lived in a shared room for six years.

ETA: Boyfriend thought the word "lovemuffin" was very cute. *g*

I hope you enjoy your new place! I think this imperviousness to space-sharing is a European thing. My sister-in-law is always dragging my brother to visit people and they stay with them in these tiny apartments for, like, a week or two at a time. No one seems to mind, but my mother and I are horrified. I... people freak me out. Fraser? He feels the same way; I know it. Kowalski is with you guys.

*ducks* Hee, I just shared the word with him. Although, he could easily find all my fannish stuff--I leave printed-out piles of slash in the bookcase, and he could read my open tabs if he wanted to. But I think he's just more interested in his own stuff.

Hmm, Fraser. Yes and no. I mean, he lives in his office? Also, I bet RCMP training made him used to living in dorms and stuff. I do think he's a private person, but I think it's more that he keeps his thoughts and feelings to himself. (See, the conversation can always be turned to Fraser.)
