For once I decided not to save up a book I was looking forward to. I loved this one too, and I hope the fourth one is eventually finished. I liked the problems of the continuing struggle for peace, and also seeing Shaftal's past and the way it is and isn't like the idealization of Shaftal in the present. And the thing with the glyph book was pretty great. The whole series much recommended!
Alanya to Alanya by L. Timmel Duchamp (#1 in the Marq'ssan Cycle)
Next up in my feminist SF/F reading! The set-up strikes me as a bit of a wish-fulfilment scenario (in 2076, benevolent aliens come to Earth in order to force us to change our oppressive and warlike social structures). But it was quite tense and page-turney, and actually more like a political thriller than I expected--I was on the edge of my seat many times. The overall character arc was easy to predict (the negotiator for the oppressive government defects to the other side), but yeah, still tense and exciting to read. Has anyone read this series? Opinions? *ponders whether to read the next four books*
