Feb 17: Went back to Lost Honour, transcribed a bunch and cleaned up that slew of alibi sentences I wrote.

This is a Hornblower fic, right? Although from the title, it sounds like Broster would have enjoyed it too. *g* Anyway, go you! \o/

Yup, working title "Hornblower's Lost Honour" -- which shows every sign of being its real title, I've called it that for so long. I started it just before the pandemic, and it's currently 60K and maybe 2/3 done? Perhaps? I'd like to get it done this year, but it goes in fits and starts, so we'll see.

Premise: there's a canon story in which, to prevent Napoleon's escape from St. Helena, Hornblower swears to a lie on his honour as a gentleman. Of course the sacrifice is justified -- what is his honour against the threat of the world enveloped in war again? -- but he goes into deep mourning for his honour and attempts to resign his title and commission. (He even refuses to shake hands with people, for how contaminated and betrayed would they feel to have shaken hands with a man without honour???) Forester walks it all back at the last second, but hey, what is fic for if not to make characters live with their decisions?

And yes, I have thought about it when discussions of Broster and honour come up. I don't know if it would appeal to Broster's fans, but it is nice to know that Hornblower isn't the only character who is a dramatic little bitch about his honour. (Muttering indistinctly into his pillow about his honour is DEF something Hornblower would have done in his 20s, had he anyone to mutter TO.)

Well, I enjoyed your previous Hornblower longfic, so I would definitely give it a chance! : )

Many of Broster's such plots involve people thinking that a character has done something dishonourable, but here's a character actually doing it. Which sounds like fun to explore!

I do sometimes wonder how the way we fic writers write honor for our iddy, slashy purposes compares to the actual 18th century (or 19th century in this case) reality of it. Of course the real version did have the stuff about keeping one's word and returning obligations, but as I understand it, it also had men being ridiculously quick to take offense at imagined slights ("You took my seat at the theater! I must have satisfaction!"), and probably some pretty misogynistic aspects as well (women's behavior reflecting on men's honor). And probably there are aspects of it that I will never understand, as well.

Ha ha, not that I am going to stop writing 18th century men angsting about their honor…
