DSSS letter
Oct. 21st, 2009 08:49 pmMy first request was for Fraser family backstory. If you happen to know me at all, you probably know that this is kind of my fannish obsession. I love all the little references to Fraser's family that are scattered through canon, and I love stories that fill in the blanks. I'm interested in them all as characters, but since Fraser is my favorite character, I'm also interested in their influences on him.
If you want ideas, here are a few: We know that Bob wrote to Caroline when he was away, so you could write an epistolary story featuring their correspondence. Or how about a story about Bob and Buck's partnership? What was the relationship between Caroline and Martha like? In "Letting Go", Bob doesn't look particularly surprised when Martha turns up, does this mean ghosts are common in the Fraser family? What about Caroline, did she haunt Bob after her death? Did Benton get up to anything wildly dangerous as a kid (you know he did)?
And I know I said "gen" in the request, but canon pairings like Bob/Caroline are obviously welcome, and you could also include possible pairings from Fraser's youth, such as Fraser/Smithbauer, Fraser/Eric, etc.
My second request was for a vid about Fraser's relationship to his father. I know nothing about vidding, but I love to watch vids, and whatever you make for me will probably make me squee. I'd prefer something serious rather than comedy, and my tastes run mostly to various kinds of folk music, although I like lots of other stuff, too. If there's too little footage of Bob, or there's something else that makes my idea impracticable (I really do know nothing about vidding), I would love anything Fraser-centric. Maybe a Fraser/Canada vid? Really, as long as Fraser is in it, I will be happy.
My third request was for a Fraser/Victoria story. I've become more and more interested in this pairing over the year, despite (or probably because of) the tragedy of it. I would prefer for Victoria to be a human being and not an incarnation of evil (but that doesn't mean you have to redeem what she did). I don't mind angst, so if your muse wants you to write deathfic or a ghost story, go ahead.
Random other stuff that I like:
- magical realism!
- landscape and nature description
- dogsledding
- documentation style fics (i e based around documents or letters)
And finally: this is the first time I participate in an exchange, and I'm pretty nervous about it. Probably more nervous than you are, so you know, don't feel scared about writing/vidding for me. I will love whatever you come up with, I promise. : )

Date: 2009-10-22 04:14 pm (UTC)I don't touch Fraser/Victoria (I have trauma :), but I like to read Fraser/Smithbauer on occasion. There is not a lot of it, really. It would be great to have more. But in general I'm not big on reading Fraser stories that do not include at least some of the Chicago characters, because I find Fraser alone in the North to be tragic and depressing, and that goes for his childhood, too, of course--because it was tragic and depressing. (Yes, I know you often like those themes, and I totally realize I'm the odd one, not you. :)
But your request opens up all sorts of possibilities. It will be interesting to see what Santa comes up with. The ghosts of a sled-dog team, sighted like the Mackenzie, appearing and disappearing in the Arctic night? One can only speculate. :)

When I record podfic, though, I do seem to prefer the long F/K epics with happy endings. (Also, about the podfic stuff: tell me if you want some tips and tricks when you start. My editing process is more than ten times as fast now compared to when I started.)
And you know, you probably said that about the ghost sled-dogs just to tease me, but now I totally want ghost sled-dogs...

Date: 2009-10-22 06:49 pm (UTC)I didn't say the ghost-sled-dog thing to tease you, precisely. Yes, the original thought was a joke, but then I got to thinking that would be really neat. A sort of MoTB in the North, with the ghostly sled team standing in for the Mackenzie. I'm not the one to write it, but I hope someone does. :)
