That is the way the story came into my brain...I think the canonical Major Character Death has made me much more amenable to experimenting with similar storylines in fic, where different characters die. As well as happily-ever-after endings, of course! I couldn't do it if I didn't have those too.

I agree, the source canonically being a tragedy -- and that working for a good number of us -- leaves a lot of space to play with alternative tragic endings. One of my favorite things you've ever written is the one where Ewen is executed, and one of my favorites of
So, yes, I'll have to strap myself in good for this, but... Eh, when I give fic recs for this fandom, I divide them into two classes, "wallow-in-its" and "fix-its". Because sometimes what I want is to wallow around in the crunchy grief of it all, and it's nice to have fic options for doing that!
