Chainsaws! Making chainsaw chain used to be my whole entire job. I hope your lesson included a section on kickback? Also, are you using a low-kickback chain?

Oh cool, I didn't know that! Yes, kickback was definitely included. Alas, I do not know enough about chains to answer the other question.

Very glad to hear it! Kickback is hella dangerous.

Regular chains have (probably chromed) cutters that stick up above a fairly flat profile.

Low-kickback chains have the same cutters, but also some of the other (black) links have sticky-up bits, too. Either all the outer links (tie straps) have backswept "wings" that stick up to a similar height as the cutters, or the drive links (in the middle, with the sticky-down bit that engages with the drive sprocket) also have bumps on top that create a little ramp running up to the cutter. Both designs make it so that the cutter's depth guage doesn't strike the wood so violently as it rounds the bar tip.

Here's a picture of each kind of low-kickback chain. The one that modifies the drive links is on top; the one that modifies the tie straps is on the bottom. (Here's regular chain for comparison. ETA: Clearer picture, with labels!)

Professional loggers tend to prefer regular chain because it's more aggressive, but it is more dangerous to use. Low kickback chain tends to be more popular in the consumer market.

I see that the long metal thing along which the chain runs is called a "guide bar" in English. Much more boring than in Sweden, where it is called a sword!
