1) I have seen Star Wars. I am hugely delighted and charmed! I mean, I'm sure I could quibble about stuff if I wanted to, but I do not want to. INSTEAD I WANT TO WATCH IT AGAIN.

2) I have a Yuletide gift! It is The First Train into Brotherhood, a Dispossessed story about the early days of Anarres and the difficulties and debates about constructing a language together. It is pretty great. Thank you so much, anonymous writer!
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
1) Guess who's got two thumbs and a first draft of her Yuletide story? ME. \o/ Ha, and I was worried about being able to write at all. I guess now I can work some more on my bonus Yuletide story.

2) We have a new flatmate! Or will have, anyway--one of my flatmates is moving out at New Year and we had to find someone new. It was pretty painless; we held a bunch of interviews and me and my remaining flatmate agreed at once about who we wanted to ask. She said yes, so that's settled. Also she has a cute dog.

3) Hmm, what else? Life is pretty much as usual. I have my standard bread baking in the oven; maybe I'll share the recipe:

Mix 2 deciliters of plain yoghurt with 12 deciliters of warm water, add salt and a little bit of yeast, and then 2 liters of coarsely ground rye flour. Put the bowl in a plastic bag and let it stand for 24-48 hours. This makes for a great fake sourdough! Then mix in fine wheat flour until the dough is firmer (but still almost loose enough to "flow" off the spoon). Butter and flour three rectangular bread pans and put the dough in. Let rise for an hour. Then bake in 200 degrees Celsius for 1 h 20 min. Remove from pans and wrap bread in towels immediately; let cool. Then put the bread in plastic bags and let it mature for a day before eating.

1) I have written 250 words of Yuletide story, and am pleased with what I've written! *relieved* It's like there's some sort of Yuletide magic that makes me able to write; I've never failed to have ideas for it.

2) I went to a CPR and first aid course at work, which felt useful.

3) This weekend I am crossing off a square on my year-bingo: to attend some sort of activity/event which interests me but which I am nervous to do or which is a bit out of my comfort zone or usual interests. I've done two things:
a) going to this conference, largely attended by computer geeks but also by others. I would've not even known about it, but an acquaintance convinced me to come and do some volunteer stuff for this democratic email organization whose email I use. Doesn't this panel look super-weird? IDK, I didn't go to it. I did go to a biohacking panel where we got to mix spit, soap, pineapple juice, salt, and vodka in order to see strings of our DNA (before this I had never even heard of biohacking). Anyway, there were all sorts of interesting people there who were open to talking, so it was nice. I'm going back tomorrow.
b) I also went to some lectures about Rojava and the situation in Syria, organized by the Swedish Rojava solidarity groups. I've given a fair amount of money to them, so it felt good to learn more. I was slightly afraid that this would be lots of people who already knew each other, so I dragged a friend along. Ha, turned out there was someone I knew from the syndicalist union there, which is not surprising. Anyway, I was so impressed by the journalist Joakim Medin who is one of the few foreign journalists who have spent a lot of time in Rojava (and even been thrown in prison by Assad's forces). He was riveting as a speaker and he knew so much!

So yeah, I think both of those were successes! Be in the world more, is maybe the lesson here.

I was at my sister's daughter's baptism this weekend, and it was a ton of work: they had sixty people there, and I helped cook beforehand and wash dishes and clean afterwards. I'm actually very efficient in such situations, I think due to having worked at a restaurant when I was younger, but I do get tired afterwards. At one point I looked at the clock and said "Seven o'clock?? I thought it was four." The dish-washing trance...at least the place had a restaurant-style dishwasher. The baptism itself was nice (though in half-incomprehensible Danish, since my sister's boyfriend is Danish and his mother did the baptism), and so was the party. I sang a song, which went well, and I gave my niece books, which she will hopefully appreciate when she's a bit older.

Then I had six hours of teaching on Monday, and I've felt kind of like a phone with its battery down to 5% since then. I'm slowly recharging, and this weekend I'm just going to take it easy, and two different friends are coming for short little visits, so I get some socializing without having to go anywhere. \o/

So, Yuletide. I think I'm going to sign up. The worst that can happen is that I default, right? I guess I'll recycle some of my old requests, and I'll have to look through the list to see what I can offer.

Oh, and: I had the weirdest dream last night, you know the sort of little mini-dreams you can get when you're half-falling asleep, and then you wake up because it's so weird: a dildo falling from a great height, down through the clouds, forever falling and never reaching the earth. What does this mean, O internets?
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
It's mythological mpreg, though? Every mythology needs a bit of that, I think. : )

El-ahrairah and the Litter of Kittens (2150 words) by Luzula
Fandom: Watership Down - Richard Adams
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Hyzenthlay, Thethuthinnang, Original Characters
Additional Tags: Mythology - Freeform, Mpreg, Female Relationships, Storytelling, Misses Clause Challenge
Summary: In Efrafa, Hyzenthlay tells a story to her friends: a story where a doe gets the better of El-ahrairah.

I was a bit worried when I signed up, since my track record for writing hasn't been good this year. But it worked out fine when I got going, and I am pleased with the story. [personal profile] exeterlinden helped with brainstorming and early beta when she visited in November, and [personal profile] akamine_chan beta-read the finished story. Thank you! ♥ My recipient didn't comment, though, which worries me a little--maybe they really hate mpreg? They didn't list it among their dislikes, though, and they do like mythology and genderswap. Ah well.

For Yuletide I received For the Best, a lovely Laurie/Andrew fic by [archiveofourown.org profile] queen_ypolita! Thank you so much! ♥ Also I got a treat: Advices and Queries, an intriguing Laurie/Andrew drabble by [archiveofourown.org profile] El_Staplador. Thank you!

And then there were mod treats for dSSS: The Wolf Gets A Christmas Wish Too by [archiveofourown.org profile] Dogsled, The Good Stuff by [personal profile] desireearmfeldt, and the podfic of [personal profile] china_shop's story Lies, Neckties and Ballistics by [personal profile] malnpudl. Thank you all, I feel spoiled! ♥ I have not had the time to listen to the podfic or read the last story yet (have been at my parents' place), but I will. : )

I've been reading a fair amount of holiday fic, and I had ambitions of making recs, but it has not happened yet. Ah well.
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
1) I have almost 1000 words on my Yuletide story. There's some plot that I'm not sure of, but I think it'll work out okay. Which is a relief--it's been half a year since I've written anything, so I was a bit worried about signing up.

2) I had [personal profile] exeterlinden here for a visit last weekend! We went hiking, tree climbing (I have gotten a second harness just so I can take friends climbing), watched movies (she showed me Whale Rider and I showed her Papillon) and did Yuletide writing and mutual beta-reading. It was pretty great.

3) I have discovered the comforts of putting a hot water bottle at my feet when I go to bed. This is a discovery that many people have made before me, I know. I have no idea why I haven't done it before! *has cold feet and a cold house*

4) I can recommend the due South story Origin Story by [personal profile] scribe and [profile] seascribe! It's 30 000 words of Ray/Ray/Stella, which is a pairing I've not seen much of before. There's also Oasis by [personal profile] scribe, which is a lovely Ray Vecchio/Anita Cortez story set in Vegas, with some great undercover stuff. And finally I can recommend In A Yellow Wood by [archiveofourown.org profile] Deputychairman which is a bit of a different take on Fraser/Victoria than I've seen before.

Papillon, Paksenarrion, The Charioteer, The Dispossessed )
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
The brainstorming and fandom promotion posts on [livejournal.com profile] yuletide have passed me by, sadly (I only subscribe to the admin journal). But anyway, I am doing Yuletide, and I hope it can get me excited about writing again!

So. Three nominations. I want to recycle three of my requests from last year:
- Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon (Paksenarrion gen)
- the 1978 Papillon movie (Henri "Papillon" Charrière/Louis Dega)
- The Charioteer by Mary Renault (Andrew/Laurie)

and I have a new request for this year: Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series, specifically Thendara House (Magda/Camilla or Magda/Jaelle). There's no fic about them at all, so I'm pretty sure I need to nominate that one myself, and also Papillon. I am not sure whether to nominate the whole of Darkover, though, or just that book? The new Yuletide rules don't allow series that don't share enough characters/setting, such as the Hainish Cycle, and I guess that could apply to Darkover, so I'll play it safe. I guess the wranglers can always syn Thendara House to the main Darkover tag later. ETA: Okay, someone just told me about the MZB child abuse thing, which passed me by because I was away from the internet large parts of the summer. Will think about that nomination some more.

Paks has been nominated in the past by other people, and so has Charioteer, so I'm holding off on those for now and hoping someone else will nominate them. *goes to make comment in the nominations post*

Since we get 3-6 requests, there are a couple of other fandoms I would consider requesting if they happen to get nominated by someone else: The Dispossessed and Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, 3:10 to Yuma (2007) (Ben Wade/Dan Evans or Ben Wade/Dan Evans/Alice Evans), Deadwood (Jane/Joanie).
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
For Yuletide I wrote two fics for my recipient [archiveofourown.org profile] Snow, because I matched on two fandoms!

A Crack in the Wall (6798 words) by Luzula
Fandom: Hadestown (Musical), Greek and Roman Mythology
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Eurydice/Persephone
Characters: Eurydice (Hadestown), Persephone (Hadestown)
Additional Tags: Revolution, Poverty, Mining
Summary: Eurydice, in the Underground.

I started this fic half a year ago and talked about it in my journal, I think? It's funny, because I was wavering on my Persephone characterization, trying to decide which way to go, and then [personal profile] exeterlinden beta-read it for me two days before Christmas, and she was all "go to the daaark side!" And I did. *g* I also want to thank [personal profile] keerawa for taking a look at an early version, and [personal profile] moetushie for doing a super-fast beta for a stranger asking out of the blue. The fic didn't get that many comments, but my recipient liked it, and I'm happy with how it came out. I've been wanting to write something for Hadestown for a while, and I'm glad I did.

Down Among the Weeds (3887 words) by Luzula
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Tam Lin (Traditional Ballad)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Janet/Tam Lin
Characters: Janet (Tam Lin), Tam Lin
Additional Tags: Explicit Consent, Ballads, Revisionist Fairy Tale
Summary: Janet brings Tam Lin out of the wild woods.

I started on this one, too, before I even got my assignment. I'm especially grateful to [personal profile] noracharles for very useful beta feedback, to [personal profile] raspberryhunter who also gave useful feedback, and to [personal profile] jjhunter who looked at an early draft and helped me with a bit of brainstorming. This didn't get many comments either, but I liked how it came out. I've been thinking about Tam Lin on and off for months, and I'm glad I could get my thoughts out in fic form.

Your Fading Fire (2474 words) by Luzula
Fandom: due South
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Benton Fraser/Victoria Metcalf
Characters: Benton Fraser, Victoria Metcalf
Additional Tags: Episode Tag, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Angst
Summary: Fraser gets on the train. It's Victoria who has second thoughts.

Um, so this is the one I was not really happy with. My recipient liked it, though, so that's the most important thing, I guess? The problem was that my recipient wanted Fraser/Victoria porn with him in handcuffs, and I'd written a Fraser/Victoria fic with a scene similar to that for the last dSSS. So I just didn't know if I had anything more to say about that. I did find a new angle on it, I guess, but I'm not really sure it worked. Thanks to [profile] seascribe for beta-reading and reassurance, and to [livejournal.com profile] darlas_mom for pushing me to improve it. Heh, and obviously the title is a Gerard Manley Hopkins quote.
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
For the due South Seekrit Santa exchange, I got this:

That Hand of Cards Was a Full House (5974 words) by Anonymous
Rating: Explicit
Relationships: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski/Denny Scarpa, Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, Benton Fraser/Denny Scarpa, Ray Kowalski/Denny Scarpa
Characters: Benton Fraser, Ray Kowalski, Denny Scarpa
Additional Tags: Threesome - F/M/M, Episode Related
Summary: Asked to look after Denny Scarpa a second time, Ray soon realizes he has his hands full- in ways he hadn't even imagined. And then there's Fraser. Ray loses himself in Lady Shoes' game... but he feels pretty good about his cards and he still has that IOU on air.

Which really fits my request perfectly! It's basically Lady Shoes playing games with Ray and Fraser, with some really hot porn. Thank you so much, whoever you are! : )

For Yuletide, I got this as my main gift:

A Girl In The War (5796 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Hadestown (Musical)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Hades/Persephone, Eurydice/Orpheus
Characters: Eurydice (Hadestown), Hermes (Hadestown), Persephone (Hadestown), Hades (Hadestown), Eris (Greek and Roman Mythology), Thanatos (Greek Mythology), Hecate (Greek and Roman Mythology), Erinyes (Greek and Roman Mythology)
Additional Tags: Angst, Bittersweet Ending, Revolution, Background Relationships, Gangs
Summary: One girl started a fire and watched the others fan the flames. Eurydice wasn’t saved by Orpheus, so she saves herself. This is the story of revolution in Hadestown.

Yay, Hadestown fic! Thank you! I was so happy to get something focusing on Eurydice, and the take on Persephone was interesting, too. Also, it's always so interesting to see people's takes on worldbuilding in the Hadestown world. I also got two treats, one of which was for Papillon, and the other was a Laurie/Andrew ficlet for The Charioteer that I really liked! Thank you, treat writers. ♥

I've written one dSSS fic and two Yuletide fics. None of them are particularly surprising, but stumbling on one of the Yuletide fics is like a needle in a haystack, I guess. If you guess any of them, I'll write you a ficlet. Obviously this offer is only valid if I have not already told you about them. : P
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
So hey, guess what I did today? Finished the first draft of my Yuletide story! I do actually mean to write a second Yuletide story as well, but now I have one, and if I get stalled on the second one, it won't matter. But I should really get to work on my dSSS story instead.

I spent today meeting up with the Danish fen outside Copenhagen, and it was most excellent! Except that I just missed [personal profile] exeterlinden with five minutes, but you can't have everything, I guess.

I have also signed up for Bitching Party in Seattle in April. I am not 100% sure that I can go yet, but if I can't, I'll only lose $20 when I refund. So who else is going?
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
Are you kidding me?!? I matched on TWO of my offers. And I only offered five tiny fandoms, so the odds of that must be pretty low. I have ideas for both of these fandoms (actually, I have WIP:s in both these fandoms), so if I have time, maybe I'll write one main story and one treat? Anyway, yay for matching on something I can write! \o/ Now I just need to be disciplined enough to actually write.
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
Yay, we share a small fandom! I tried to give a sense of my tastes in each fandom, but please don't feel constrained by any of the specific suggestions. Just have fun writing and I am sure I will love it!

Papillon, Paksenarrion, The Charioteer, Hadestown )
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
Will definitely nominate and request: Papillon (Henri "Papillon" Charriere, Louis Dega).

Things I will request that other people are planning to nominate:
The Charioteer by Mary Renault (Laurie Odell, Andrew Raynes)
Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon (Paksenarrion)

I did get a lovely Sandra fic for Midsummer Santa, but hey, I'd love more Sandra and Emily fic, so I think I'll nominate and request Wilby Wonderful. Anyone want me to nominate any other Wilby characters? Left to myself, I guess I'd nominate Duck and Dan as well.

So I guess I have two nomination slots left over? Since we have up to six requests this year, though, that means I could theoretically nominate two more things I want to request. Or I could nominate two things I know I can write, since we need five offers this year, and I'm always a bit worried I won't find enough things I can write. I will ponder this further.

luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
I want to post Yuletide recs and participate in the Snowflake challenge, but alas, my hands and back impose limits on my typing. Ah well. Nobody guessed either of my holiday exchange stories! I, on the other hand, was right in 11 of my 17 guesses for the due South Seekrit Santa exchange. *g* Anyway, for that exchange I wrote:

Turns of Tempest (7127 words) by Luzula
Relationships: Benton Fraser/Victoria Metcalf
Summary: In the end, she couldn't do it. All that planning, all the nights Victoria had spent in prison daydreaming about how she'd bring him down--when she was faced with the reality of betraying Benton Fraser, she couldn't do it. Even though he'd betrayed her, all those years ago.

I had the idea for this story a while ago, and I'm glad I could use it for dSSS. I'm reasonably happy with how it came out, and I'm grateful to [personal profile] keerawa and especially to [personal profile] exeterlinden for beta and brainstorming. While writing it, I discovered that basically all of Gerard Manley Hopkins' poetry is relevant for Fraser/Victoria, so I kind of went overboard with the poetry quoting, heh. This story makes me want all the fork-in-the-road AU:s for this pairing--like, did anyone ever write a story where Fraser lets her go up in the mountains instead of turning her in?

Building the Castle of Roses (6240 words) by Luzula
Fandom: Sleeping Beauty
Additional tags: Fairy Tales, Science Fiction, Bechdel Test Pass, Coming of Age, Closed Ecological Systems, Space Flight, Mentor Relationship, Misses Clause Challenge, Science
Summary: Sleeping Beauty in space.

This is story is an old WIP of mine that I could use since my recipient basically only said that they wanted a fairy tale retelling. I'm grateful to [personal profile] mergatrude, [personal profile] isis, and [personal profile] innocentsmith for beta-reading! Several people said in comments that they wanted this to be a novel, and I think I kind of did, too--it felt like I was only showing glimpses of the story, and it wandered pretty far from the original fairy tale. Anyway, I had fun with the world-building, and I grew fond of both Rose and Dr. Malfleur.
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
1) I watched the 2011 Jane Eyre movie last night with my mom, and I really liked it! I thought both Jane and Mr. Rochester were well cast--and okay, now I realize why there exists an XMFC/Jane Eyre fusion fic (I really recommend that fic, BTW). I liked Jane especially--she really worked for me. It was interesting to see Jamie Bell as St. John, although I did think they could've built up to his proposal a bit more.

2) I forgot to announce one of my podfics here: Just A Kiss, a Sherlock podfic which is a collaboration with six other podficcers that [personal profile] helens78 organized. Haven't listened to it yet, but I love recording 15 minutes and getting a two-hour podfic back. *g*

3) Speaking of podfic, until recently a podfic had the most hits on the AO3 of all my works during 2012! Granted, it's a podfic of a long fic by a popular author in a popular fandom, but still, this makes me want to put all my podfics up on the AO3 (the one I linked is a collaboration and was put up by a co-reader). But I've been holding out for separate media categories, because otherwise I'd have to go back and edit all those podfic posts when we do get them, and I have a lot of podfics. Hmmmm. *dithers*

4) I've read a fair amount of the dSSS fics, and I've made my way through the short and sweet stories in Madness, but I've barely made a dent in the main Yuletide archive. I won't offer rewards for guessing my Yuletide fic, because it's a former WIP that I've talked about a bit in my journal (but feel free to guess anyway!) I'd love to see if anyone can guess my due South holiday fic, though, and I offer a ficlet as a reward to the first one who guesses right (betas not included, of course). I don't think it should be that hard to guess.
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
1) Right, so I got my Yuletide assignment. And okay, first I hyperventilated a bit before I dared to click on it, but okay, that is totally doable! In fact, I can use an old WIP that I have 4000 words written of already, since the recipient is very open in their request. Heh, in fact I offered that fandom with just the thought of maybe being able to use that story, and I don't have to re-familiarize myself with canon first, either. \o/ So hopefully that should not be too stressful, although I should know better than to say that.

2) Does anyone want to watch Bullitt with me? I want to watch it for the due South connection--it's not even remotely C6D, but Ray Kowalski's crush on Steve McQueen is basically canon, and I have never seen a Steve McQueen movie. I thought it might be interesting. Is the C6D-watching chat group still doing Flashpoint, btw?
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
My final Yuletide nominations are:
Hainish Cycle - Ursula K. Le Guin (Laia Odo, Shevek, Takver)
3:10 to Yuma (Ben Wade, Dan Evans, Alice Evans)
Deadwood (Joanie, Jane)

So, to podbang or not to podbang. They've raised the wordcount to 30,000 from 20,000 (at least I remember it as being 20,000 before), and in some fandoms, that's a big limitation. Like, there are only four fandoms I could put on that nominations form, I think, and for some of them, even if there are fics longer than 30,000 words that I like enough to record, there's not much to choose from. I guess it just doesn't fit with the way I like to choose fics to record? I choose a fic because I love it and think I'll do a good job of recording it, and it's harder to do that with a lower limit of 30,000 words. It's a big investment in time and energy, and I think I'd maybe want to spend that time recording fics entirely of my choosing. Or I suppose I could offer just due South if it gets past the nomination stage--choosing a >30,000 word fic there wouldn't be hard compared to, say, in Master and Commander.

I am not in any way criticizing podbang, though! Just trying to figure out if it fits me personally. It wouldn't be as hard to decide about participation if I didn't have so much teaching right now. That limits my voice resources so much. : ( Are other podficcers on my flist doing it? I suspect this is an easier challenge to participate in if you're in multiple big fandoms...
luzula: a Luzula pilosa, or hairy wood-rush (Default)
I can't believe it's that time of year already. Anyway, I'm definitely going to recycle two of my requests from last year that didn't get filled:

- the Paksenarrion series by Elizabeth Moon (I want gen fic about Paksenarrion)
- the Hainish cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin (I want fic about Laia Odo, the founder of the Odonian movement on Anarres, or more generally fic for the Dispossessed. I wouldn't say no to Left Hand of Darkness fic either.)

I'll nom the second of these (I know someone else who will nominate the first).

Things I might want to request:

- Wilby Wonderful (gen fic about Emily and/or Sandra)
- 3:10 to Yuma (the remake) (Ben Wade/Dan Evans)
- the Spin series by Chris Moriarty (Li/Cohen)
- Deadwood (Jane/Joanie)

I've also pondered requesting Clare/Irene from the 1920's novel Passing by Nella Larsen. It's about two women who have made different life choices but who keep being fascinated and drawn to each other--there's a very clear erotic subtext. It's been some time since I listened to it, though (there's a great reading of it on Librivox) and I'd have to reread/listen to remember it well, so I might not prioritize this one. Has anyone read it?

Also, [personal profile] malnpudl has talked me into shipping Robert Lee/James Longstreet from the American Civil War novel The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara (or, you know, it's historical RPF, but I don't know how much the actual people were like the author's interpretations). It really is extremely slashy.

Oh, and also, I'd read slash for the Mark Knopfler song "Sailing to Philadelphia". Except that I really know nothing about Mason and Dixon except for what's in that song. And, weirdly, I want a science fiction fic for the Dire Straits song "Brothers in Arms" (it's the line "there's so many different worlds" that does it for me).

...so why exactly am I shipping people from American history? It's not like I actually know much about American history, since I'm not, y'know, American. Weird. Ah well.

Anyway, in conclusion: two of my nominations are still open!
